Wolverine Pathways Science Teacher


Compensation: $35/hour

This is a part-time temporary position.

The University of Michigan Wolverine Pathways was established to increase the high school graduation rate, college acceptance and retention rates of academically promising scholars. The Wolverine Pathways teachers will provide exemplary service to the communities of Ypsilanti, Southfield, or Detroit and expertise in their given subject area of Science. They will facilitate the winter program for highly motivated rising 7th and 10th grade scholars. We are also looking for teachers to fill positions for the fall Saturday sessions, and weeekly summer sessions.


  • Teach pre-developed curriculum to highly motivated students during eight week winter sessions;  Science:  February 25 through April 29

  • Science areas include: environmental science, watershed, climate change, sustainability, engineering, alternative and clean energy, food systems, diet, nutrition and epidemiology of disease

  • Maintain documentation of work and scholar progress in order to present as needed to scholars, parents, district facilitators, etc.

  • Collaborate with other insructors in program as needed before program begins

  • Attend all assigned classes as well as opening and closing programs

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related specialty

  • Certification in specialty/grade level

  • At least 2 years experience in selected subject area

  • Experience with project-based teaching styles

  • Science teachers should have experience with inquiry-based teaching styles

  • Have excellent communication and problem solving skills

  • Desire to be an advocate for the development of students

  • Be dynamic and creative in the implementation of lessons

  • Be proficient in oral and written communication skills

  • Must be able to attend pre-session training day and professional development sessions

  • Specific ability-based competencies include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; and the ability to work as part of a team

  • Prepare and administer course and student assessments

  • Communicate any conflicts or other things that could potentially compromise the integrity of the teaching and learning in writing to the Project Coordinator

Desired Qualifications*

  • At least 4 years experience in selected subject area

  • Rated “highly effective” on school evaluations

  • If a high school teacher, experience with ACT/SAT preparation facilitation
