Job Summary

The University of Michigan seeks a creative, innovative, energetic and thoughtful individual who can provide senior level leadership in the delivery of investigations, programming and services for the entire University of Michigan community.  The new Associate Vice Provost and Senior Director will provide leadership and direction in support of diversity, inclusiveness, equal access, equitable treatment, and cultural understanding and competency.  This individual, collaborating with other University of Michigan senior leadership, will develop and/or contribute to strategic planning, policy creation and other efforts to build a community rich in cultural understanding and an ethical work environment free from all forms of discrimination and/or harassment. The Associate Vice Provost and Senior Director also oversees the University’s mediation efforts involving faculty and staff.  

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will be responsible for enforcing applicable University policy that prohibits all forms of discrimination and harassment, as outlined in the University’s non-discrimination statement.  As such, the person is responsible for the oversight and facilitation of efforts to foster a working, learning and living environment that is free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. In addition, this person serves as the University’s Title IX Coordinator and ADA Coordinator.

The Associate Vice Provost and Senior Director reports directly to the Associate Vice-President for Human Resources, and has a reporting relationship to the Vice Provost for Equity, Inclusion, and Academic Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer.  The person will collaborate with a wide variety of campus partners, including  the Vice-President for Student Affairs, Office of the General Counsel, the Ombuds Offices, the Health System Human Resources Department and the regional campuses human resource offices in delivering services and programming. 

The Associate Vice Provost and Senior Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office for Institutional Equity (OIE).  The Office works with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to prevent and to resolve conflicts based on allegations of discrimination, discriminatory harassment, and retaliation. The Office provides training and consultation on achieving and supporting a diverse, welcoming and supportive working and learning environment.  The office also provides training and outreach on all civil rights matters in an effort to ensure the University’s on-going compliance with various federal and state civil rights laws.  The Office also provides support to a number of constituency groups.

OIE oversees, facilitates and supports the University’s efforts to ensure equal opportunity for all persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, height, weight, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, or veteran status in employment, educational programs and activities, and admissions.

This position will also ensure that all general university policies and procedures are implemented and well documented, performing occasional internal reviews, and identifying compliance issues that call for formal attention. This position will help to develop risk management strategies to avoid non-compliance and file compliance reports with regulatory bodies.

Required Qualifications*

  • High productivity in a fast-paced environment
  • A minimum of five years of experience with increasing responsibility at an academic institution of higher education
  • Extensive knowledge of AA/EEO, Title IX and Civil Rights laws and regulations
  • Ability to provide thought leadership on issues related to the mission of this office to deans, directors and other senior leadership
  • A values-based approach to the creation of an ethical workplace that appropriately balances management and employee perspectives
  • Ability to influence direction and decisions in a decentralized academic environment with multiple constituency groups, and multiple levels of leadership
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Experience dealing with student conduct adjudication, investigations, dispute resolution, and compliance
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret all federal and state higher education civil rights laws and regulations
  • Success in value-based strategic planning, policy development, proactive program development and administration
  • Progressively responsible professional experience with significant accomplishments in diversity management, affirmative action, and resolution of discrimination and harassment complaints
  • Ability and experience in analyzing data and surveys, producing narrative and data reports and presentations, and in developing tools to measure progress towards programmatic goals
  • Excellent supervisory and project and program management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • J.D. or M.A. in a related field or equivalent education and experience
  • Excellent judgment, ability to maintain a fair and neutral position in significant disputes, and ability to work independently.
