Information and Technology Services (ITS) at the University of Michigan has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer. Responsibilities include participating in multiple projects, including large and complex software development projects, which require technical proficiency in network and database technologies. Provide leadership, creativity, and strategy in the development of open source projects (e.g. perfSONAR). Collaborate with multi-institutional team members to develop, design, and create monitoring, metrics, and software control of its campus networks to assist UM in supporting data intensive science initiatives. Develop and lead a wide range of software-defined, network-related (SDN) projects. Assist with proof-of-concept demonstrations of new network technologies, ensuring integrity, testing, and effectiveness. Design, develop, integrate and implement of a wide range of network-related software projects, including projects related to network monitoring and troubleshooting, software-define networking, etc. including but not limited to leveraging open source software and cloud-based services.
*Develop, test, and validate software solutions for network systems to support the needs of researchers, student, faculty and staff.
*Participate in proof-of-concept demonstrations of new network technologies and may present information to various committees, groups, etc.
*Proactively seek information and utilize analytical and creative problem solving skills along with standard processes and technologies resulting in efficient triage and resolution of reported problems and requests.
*Develop, prepare and publish detailed documents for completed designs that includes diagnostic software and training for technical and operational teams.
*Provide accurate technical information for the development of grant proposals, RFPs, etc.
*Interact and collaborate with engineers and researchers at GEANT, Internet2, Indiana University, ESnet, as well as from other academic institutions.
*Demonstrate relationship building, effective communication skills, and quality service in the process of collaborating with, supporting, advising, and educating customers, team members, and other University departments on the use of the various network tools resulting in efficient, effective, and compliant use of the network service.
*Collaborate with the potential new users of the network, development teams, and the engineering team at the UM and other collaborative areas such as other colleges, Internet2, etc.
*Represent UM at industry and affiliate conferences, meetings and events.
*Develop and maintain relationships in the network software development community.

*Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or a related field and/or equivalent combination of education, certification and experience.
*Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a software engineering role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, and working independently to successfully develop and troubleshoot projects that are the integral part of the network infrastructure.
*Demonstrated experience determining project objectives and requirements, anticipating and solving problems, and developing standards and guidelines for unified communication systems activities.
*Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply analytical skills and the scientific methodology in troubleshooting and problem solving.
*Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate and present analytical results both verbally and in written form to technical and non-technical staff and customers.
*Demonstrated experience programming with Open Source software such as perfSONAR, Kamilio, hylafax and RRDtool that allow customizing and meets the need of the campus community.
*Demonstrated experience programming in a number of languages, including C/C++, python, Java, Perl, and shell programming in a UNIX environment.
*Demonstrated experience with system administration of UNIX systems, UNIX performance monitoring and security techniques and an understanding of UNIX system security vulnerabilities.
*Demonstrated knowledge of networking fundamentals and TCP/IP, Internet standard routing protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF, IS-IS) and advanced services (e.g., multicast, IPv6).
*Demonstrated knowledge of data structures, algorithms, software design.
*Demonstrated knowledge of modern distributed system design and implementation such as REST, XMLT and JSON.
*Demonstrated experience with software and systems interactions with networks; familiarity with Software-Defined Networking (SDN).
*Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, ability to work in a complex team environment and with multiple levels of management and staff.
*Demonstrated skills and successful performance in organizing and managing complex, organizationally distributed projects in internetworking.

*Masters degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
*Familiarity with databases.
