A technician position is available in the new laboratory of Dr. Anthony Vecchiarelli in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts. We are seeking a motivated individual with initiative to assist in lab setup. The lab uses interdisciplinary approaches to understand the mechanisms governing subcellular organization, with an emphasis on cell-free reconstitution and imaging. The successful candidate will undertake the following tasks:
Assist students with basic lab maintenance tasks, research, and lab safety
Routine maintenance of lab equipment and general lab housekeeping (waste disposal & treatment)
Maintenance/recording of plasmid constructs, bacterial strains, and mammalian cell cultures
General laboratory housekeeping (waste disposal and treatment)
Maintenance of data bases and ordering systems Building and development of microfluidic devices for fluorescence microscopy
Preparation of microbial culture media
Stock-taking and monitoring expiration dates of reagents and consumables
Liaising with external suppliers, purchasing and distributing laboratory reagents and consumables
Maintenance, user training, and logging use of fluorescence microscope Overseeing work-study in the washing of laboratory glassware and operation of autoclaves
Associate's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biophysics or related science and 1 to 2 years experience, preferably in a molecular biology laboratory.
The ideal applicant would be able to take initiative, plan strategically, possesses a special attention for details, and possess strong organizational skills, and can manage time effectively.
Intuitiveness, the ability to take responsibility and working independently as well as part of a team are required.
Must be able to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records.
Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary environment is fundamental to this position.
Candidates must have good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, and software suites used for image acquisition and analysis (NIS Elements, ImageJ or similar) and standard molecular biology (construct design, cloning, and data management)
Bachelor or Master's preferred
Previous laboratory experience with microbial genetics, mammalian cell culture, protein purification, advanced fluorescence microscopy, such as TIRFM, and/or biophysical techniques.
Flexibility and keenness to take on new tasks as the lab expands would be desirable
This is a one year term limited position.
Higher salary possible for exceptionally qualified candidate.
