The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is seeking a highly motivated, ambitioius and experienced Financial Specialist to assist with various functions of financial reporting, monitoring, budgeting and internal control processes.
Reporting and Tools: Independently prepare and review monthly and quarterly management financial reports. Work with Finance team to develop and improve reporting formats and standard reports for a variety of audience levels. Maintain and run reports as needed/applicable in Excel, Access, BusinessObjects, M-Reports, or other systems. Work on ad hoc reporting requests or portions of such requests as assigned. Track budgetary commitments and funding sources in order to ensure financial statements are accurate and reports reflect all commitments appropriately. Perform special projects to address financial projections and funding sources as assigned. Model new scenarios as requested. Evaluate effectiveness of overall suite of internally developed financial reports and tools. Ensure monthly and quarterly management financial reports are prepared and reviewed accurately and timely.
Assistance with Budget Processes: Assist with the annual internal budget allocation process, variance monitoring process, and year-end close process. Research accounting and budgeting questions and issues as they arise, and complete special projects as assigned. Assist in the development of management reports and data visualization that provide insightful analysis to enable COP leaders to make effective business decisions, including financial data related to teaching, research, facilities, and operations.
Expense approval responsibilities include: assisting faculty and staff with account classification, travel or P-Card questions, as well as approving Concur expense reports. Approve journal entries, vouchers, purchasing requisitions, payment requests, etc. Approve HR transactions.
Support academic budgetary items such as the faculty discretionary allocations, account monitoring, and endowed professorships. Prepare journal entries to transfer funds, cover overdrafts, or correct any errors.
Submit recharge rate requests, process PAF for estimated annual revenues, process service unit billings monthly. Develop year-end projections.
Facilitate the annual certification process. Solicit and compile documentation, review and analyze regular financial reports in support of unit's internal controls.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, informatics, data analytics, or equivalent education/experience.
- At least three years progressively responsible work experience with financial and budgeting processes; in a customer-focused role.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with ability to interact comfortably and professionally with various levels of management and staff, as well as with faculty. Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality. Ability to independently set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet multiple deadlines; ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to proactively identify and effectively resolve various types of problematic situations in areas that can include (but are not limited to) general analytic tasks, process/procedures, and compliance. Ability to engage in proactive, self-directed learning and thought leadership. Proven track record of completeness, accuracy and consistent attention to detail. Sound judgment, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge and experience in creating financial analyses and using Excel. Experience using Business Objects. Ability to create and modify Excel worksheets and Access databases.
- Experience with human resources transactions, recharges/service unit billings, and/or research administration.
