Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a clinical-track faculty member to work as a hospitalist on the Adult Psychiatry Inpatient Unit and Adult Consultation-Liaison Service. Effort at less than 100% is negotiable. This position is assigned to the Hospital Services Section which includes Adult Inpatient, Adult Consultation-Liaison, and Psychiatry Emergency Services.  The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, administrative, and teaching aspects of the adult inpatient, consultation-liaison and emergency psychiatry programs, with a primary focus on inpatient work. The candidate will join a dynamic group of hospital-based psychiatrists under a leadership team that values clinical ability and educational effort.

Primary clinical responsibilities for this position will be on the Psychiatry Inpatient Unit. This unit treats the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Most patients are admitted via UM Psychiatric Emergency Services or the medical-surgical units at UM Hospital. The inpatient psychiatric unit serves as a primary community hospital for the Ann Arbor region as well as a tertiary care referral center for treatment-resistant mood disorders and other refractory conditions. 

The successful candidate will join an ongoing inpatient clinical redesign initiative with the goals of innovative continuity of care affiliations with the state-of-the-art University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center as well as other components of the department's ambulatory care programs.

Maintaining excellent continuity of care has been a key focus of our program. The Psychiatry Inpatient Unit provides a consistently high level of care 7 days per week. This position may involve weekend work.   

Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position.  Because of the increasing medical complexity of patients on this unit and throughout the hospital, a familiarity and comfort with medical issues in necessary; though consultation with top-notch generalists and specialists at UM Hospital is readily available.  Academic interests are encouraged.  Programmatic research is not expected and specific protected time to do research is not allocated.  For those interested in research, the Department of Psychiatry and affiliated institutes at the University of Michigan provide state-of-the-art research facilities.

Consultation-Liaison Service
This position will also include work on the Consultation-Liaison Service during times when the hospitalist is not assigned to the inpatient unit; while these patients remain in the medical-surgical hospital, ongoing follow-up care is provided to most of them.  In addition, psychiatric liaisons with medical-surgical specialty units provide ongoing access to mental health specialists. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position.   Completion of a Psychosomatic Medicine fellowship is desirable but not required.

Required Qualifications
A doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy is required. Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary. Board-certification in Psychiatry is required, with necessary accommodation given to new/recent graduates who are in the process of certification. The applicant must desire to have hospital-based psychiatry as the primary focus of his or her career. 

Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical staff.
