Job Summary

The Section of General Surgery and the Division of Acute Care Surgery (ACS) at the University of Michigan Health System is seeking qualified Physician Assistants (PA's) or Nurse Practitioners (NP's) to join our team in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU, 5D) to provide coverage and coordinate patient care for surgical services.  The SICU is a 20 bed ICU that manages critically ill patients who have undergone a variety of general and specialty surgical procedures and also provides care for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome patients who may require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The ICU team is comprised of a surgical or anesthesiology intensivist, senior and junior surgery and anesthesiology residents and a multidisciplinary team of allied health care providers.  

Responsibilities*

This is a great opportunity for a person to provide patient care through diagnosis and treatment of patients in the SICU and to work administratively to track and improve surgical critical care services.  This role will assist in providing critical care services, and planning and coordinating patient care with other surgical specialties. The job functions include SICU inpatient rounding, ICU patient assessment, order-writing, interpretation of diagnostic test results, , assisting with documentation, performing various ICU surgical procedures, as well as educating SICU staff and trainees about ICU-based protocols and providing continuity of care for the patient and their families.  This position will also offer the opportunity to collaborate with surgeons and nurses for quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives as well as tracking and ensuring compliance with standardized protocols.  Job duties may be modified depending on the needs of the Division of Acute Care Surgery.

Required Qualifications*

NP: 
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).   
  • DEA license required, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required
  • Consideration of ACLS certification current or ability to obtain
PA: 
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP. 
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • DEA license required, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required
  • Consideration of ACLS certification current or ability to obtain
NP/PA:
  • 4 or more years of current experience as an NP/PA in critical care
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.  
  • Experience with a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care.  
  • Excellent computing skills.
