Job Summary

The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology supports teaching and research on Classical, Egyptian, and Near Eastern archaeology through stewardship of its rich collections, an active exhibitions program, sponsorship of ongoing field research, and an active publication program.  As an exhibit museum at a public university, the Kelsey Museum also embraces a vigorous public outreach mission, engaging with local residents and visitors of all ages, from kindergarten through retirement.  The Museum receives approximately 25,000 visitors annually.  Since the 1970’s, the display of the highlights of the permanent collection has been augmented by a regular program of special exhibitions, designed to illuminate certain aspects of the collection or to investigate particular themes. In addition to its local activities, the Museum currently sponsors archaeological excavations in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Sudan.

Publication is an important component of all our activities, including publication of research on the permanent collections, catalogues of special exhibitions, and archaeological field reports and outreach materials and other incidental publications in support of our work.  Textual material also plays a significant role in our core activities including exhibition wall, panel and label text.

The Editor will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Director and Director and will assist in all aspects of publication for the Museum.  This includes the development, editing and layout of exhibition and educational materials, publications and archaeological fieldwork reports.


The primary responsibilities of this position are to support the production and editing of Kelsey publications related to the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and fieldwork.  The various publication formats include scholarly books, exhibition catalogues, archaeological field reports, the Museum newsletter, and various other “ephemeral” publications, such as pamphlets and gallery guides.  The editor is responsible both for copy-editing text, and for the layout of books and other publications – essentially, for the preparation of “print-ready digital files for production.” Additional duties include the editing and layout of label copy and text panels for exhibitions, of the supporting interpretive material for both special exhibitions and the permanent collections (including exhibition websites and other online resources), and of press releases and articles related to Museum activity and research.  In this capacity, the editor works closely with the academic curators and staff of the Museum to write, edit, and produce publications that increase the access and visibility of the Kelsey’s primary resources for both academic and public audiences.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in copy-editing, graphic design, or relevant field.
  • Some publication experience.
  • Book composition skills, in-design or related application.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with archaeological or museum publications.
  • Master’s Degree.
