Job Summary

The Laboratory of Professor Shaomeng Wang in the Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School has an opening for a research faculty position in the rank of Research Investigator or Assistant Research Scientist with extensive expertise in biophysics, biochemistry and assay development. We are seeking a talented, highly-motivated and independent researcher to develop, optimize and perform biochemical and biophysical assays for a variety of epigenetics and other protein targets. This research faculty member will work closely with structural biologists, computational scientists, medicinal chemists, biochemists, cell biologists and pharmacologists to discover and develop novel therapeutics for the treatment of human cancer and other diseases. He/she will work within a team of faculty members, postdoctoral research fellows, graduate students, and research associates with ongoing projects in the above area. The successful candidate will be expected to actively perform experiments, write papers, and apply for independent funding. Additional aspects of the position will involve interacting with colleagues, teaching of graduate students in the laboratory, and attendance at national and international meetings.

Required Qualifications*

Ph.D. and/or an M.D. or equivalent, and postdoctoral training in a field related to biophysics/biochemistry and assay development. A minimum of 5-7 years’ experience with in vitro biochemical/biophysical assay development, optimization, including but not limited to protein-protein, protein-small molecule interactions and enzymatic assays, is highly desirable. Knowledge and hands-on experience with common biochemical/biophysical techniques, such as SPR, ITC, BLI, ThermoFluor, and various spectroscopic assays are expected. Experience in small-molecule drug screening and drug property evaluation is not required but a plus. Applicants should be willing to learn new skills and work independently and as a team member. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are preferred. The ability and desire to interact with a team of scientists in the laboratory and beyond are essential.
