Job Summary

As the University of Michigan’s network for student entrepreneurship and innovation, Innovate Blue helps turn ideas into action by supporting, connecting, and expanding the Michigan entrepreneurial network and community. With more than 15 centers and programs in entrepreneurship and more than 30 entrepreneurial student organizations, University of Michigan programs deliver one of the best and broadest engaged learning experiences on entrepreneurship. Taken together, programs at the University of Michigan encourage innovation, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit that spurs economic development and contributes to the public good. We also manage the campus-wide minor in entrepreneurship and through its engaged learning approach combines an educational foundation with opportunities for practice, so that students gain self-agency and the ability to innovate and take risks. The marketing coordinator’s work will reflect these experiences and engage our stakeholders to help communicate the impact of our collective entrepreneurship and innovation programs at U-M. The marketing coordinator will execute all day-to-day facets of Innovate Blue’s communications and marketing strategy and plans as set by the marketing and communications manager and the Office of Vice President for Communications staff; and assist with the reports, metrics and information necessary to evaluate and refine those plans moving forward. The University of Michigan’s entrepreneurship programs are nationally ranked; and the marketing coordinator is part of presenting that picture and interacting with our students, prospective students, donors, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Responsibilities*

The position’s duties will include:

Social Media (50%): Posting timed and spontaneous updates (using social media management software) on all social media accounts, including Twitter and Facebook, as well as potentially developing and curating a new Instagram account. Live-tweeting events as required. Tracking audience and engagement by platform. Creating events on Facebook and elsewhere as needed to mirror the units’ events calendars. Reposting/sharing messages by faculty, students, providers and thought leaders in the units’ respective industries, as appropriate/directed. Sharing photos and video as provided by the units with appropriate tagging and frequency. Helping to evaluate new social media platforms for options.

Marketing (30%): Working with the communications and marketing manager, plan, research, write, and edit news releases, feature stories, promotional copy, and other content for Innovate Blue publications, including both digital and print outlets. Develop graphics, GIFs, and other visual media to complement IB’s content and storytelling for use in digital and print media. Working with marketing and communications manager, plan, design and distribute Innovate Blue’s monthly e-newsletter and maintain analytics. Website

Coordination (20%): Regularly post content to the Innovate Blue website, including news, stories, events and other information. Attend and contribute to regular content meetings with Innovate Blue marketing and communications manager and staff. Assist with gathering and disseminating analytics reports. Maintain website quality by identifying errors to content, broken links or other needed maintenance.

Required Qualifications*

A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Information Technology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of experience working in communications, marketing, or social media in a professional setting. A high attention to detail, especially in regard to content formatting. Proficient understanding of graphic design and related software including Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Demonstrated commitment to accuracy in communications (including spelling, grammar and fact checking abilities) or experience with editing copy with precision. Demonstrated ability to tailor tone and/or message across various social media platforms. Familiarity with research regarding social media best practices. Excellent judgment regarding ethics and standards of communications. Ability to work in open, collaborative space; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; ability to manage a multi-faceted position.

Desired Qualifications*

Familiarity with an academic environment. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and/or PHP. Familiarity with WordPress format, and electronic newsletter platforms such as MailChimp. Should be highly self-directed and willing to take on new challenges.

Work Schedule

Position pays at least $22/hr depending on experience. Work days are TBD, 20 hrs/wk. Assignment begins ASAP and is expected to last approximately through June 2017.
