Job Summary

Position Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member who has expertise in depression treatment and in implementing the collaborative care model of integrated behavioral healthcare. The successful candidate will lead the implementation and evaluation of collaborative care within the University of Michigan Health System and its partners and provide consultation services for other healthcare organizations implementing this model of care.  The ideal candidate will also have a substantial health services research portfolio and evidence of an ability to garner independent research funding and oversee clinical trials.  

Responsibilities will include facilitation of and participation in University training programs relevant to collaborative care and participation in community groups that are working to expand and improve mental health treatment in Michigan communities.  The faculty member will also participate as a full member in a vibrant health services research group currently conducting studies relevant to suicide prevention, quality of depression care, peer support, interventions to reduce opioid use, and screening and brief interventions for substance use in medical and military settings.  This position will report through the Program Directors for Mental Health Innovations, Services and Outcomes program.

Clinical Activity

The faculty member will spend approximately 15-20% of his/her time in clinical care, as a consulting psychiatrist for primary care panels, supervising psychiatry residents and medical students providing clinical care, or training for students or primary care and specialty care colleagues.   An additional 15-20% of his/her time will be spent providing leadership for integrated behavioral health initiatives. Finally, 60-70% of the faculty member’s time might be spent in funded research.  The candidate will also provide some hospital-based services, entailing participation in various on-call activities, which may include scheduled weekend rounding on the inpatient unit (averages 2 times per year) and backing up PES residents on call (6-7 nights per year).

Educational Activities

The successful candidate will serve as on-site/directly available outpatient supervisor and preceptor for psychiatry house staff and medical students, and provide didactic lectures for primary care and specialty care colleagues, medical students, general psychiatry residents, child psychiatry fellows, and a broad range of health professionals and trainees (i.e; social work, psychology, pharmacy, nursing, etc..). The applicant will be welcomed and expected to share their expertise in core curriculum development/delivery, medical student teaching, Journal Clubs, Evidence-Based Medicine Seminars, and Grand Rounds.


The successful candidate will be expected to attend Faculty Meetings within the Department of Psychiatry, at minimum this will include Academic Staff, All-Staff, Physicians Meetings, and other administrative meetings deemed necessary by their reporting supervisor. In addition to timely attention to pertinent administrative work (e.g., electronic medical record and in-basket monitoring, phone calls, letters, records, e-mails, etc.), the new faculty member will participate in all relevant quality improvement initiatives and activities.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must hold MD or MD/PhD or equivalent and is required. Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary. Completion of a residency in Psychiatry is required, and the candidate must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry.  Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary and be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical Staff.
