Job Summary

Investigate and analyze potential professional liability claims and incidents; perform clinical safety management and patient safety functions; advise and train Health Care Staff in assessing, resolving and preventing incidents of risk to patients. Report significant incidents of patient injury or risk and trends to UMHS clinical management and administration. Prepare summaries of potential and litigated claims for distribution and oral presentation to institutional committees; and lead/participate in patient safety and risk education efforts for the health system. Assist outside counsel on matters in litigation; negotiate settlements within institutional guidelines. Respond to adverse event reviews; effectively communicating with staff, families and patients. 

Develop policies and procedures for reducing claims and promoting patient safety. Conduct educational training to medical, nursing and support staff on clinical safety and patient safety topics. 

Rotating on call weeks, including weekends. 

Required Qualifications*

Clinical background with Bachelor’s Degree in an Allied Health field is necessary. Candidate must have excellent communication skills. Excellent written, oral and presentation skills are necessary. Ability to analyze data for patient safety and malpractice trends and areas of potential improvement. Ability to manage multiple competing priorities with on-call duties and critical event support. Knowledge of University policies, rules and regulations. Knowledge of health care delivery, especially within specialty areas of coverage.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience as high level nurse, physician assistant, or other health care professional with clinical knowledge of health care delivery and factors that influence the level of care provided. Enthusiasm and self-initiative for making a difference in the level of quality care the Health Care System delivers. Supervisory experience a plus. Additional insurance or risk management certification such as ARM, CPHRM, CPPS, or CPCU. Experience in the management of professional medical liability claims and clinical risk control.

Work Schedule

Rotating on call weeks, including weekends.
