Job Summary

MiChart Technical team is seeking an individual to join the team that supports application infrastructure for both project initiatives and operations tasks for the MiChart implementation of Epic’s electronic health record system.  This role will provide business system analyst and project management support for all facets of work the MiChart Technical team is responsible for, including custom Cache code and web service development efforts, system patching, downtime planning and execution, system audits, along with MCIT departmental and enterprise-wide initiatives.  This position will facilitate planning sessions, track decisions, communicate and coordinate necessary changes while working within and supporting the defined change and release processes.

Under general supervision, individual will be responsible for collating system and workflow requirements, define and document use cases for the development of solutions extending the functionality of the system, services for data exchange to ancillary systems and supporting tools sets for these initiatives as well as developing operational support procedures and supporting documentation.  This role will also provide support for managing multiple environments for the MiChart implementation of the Epic EHR system, handling the technical environment needs, infrastructure planning, optimization changes and production support for the Epic system.   


  • Analyze requirements and determine best technical solution to satisfy them.
  • Assist in the coordination of software updates and changes as well as technical environment management tasks.
  • Participate in the planning, review, testing and release processes.
  • Collect information regarding potential system enhancement needs.
  • Prepare details of specifications as needed.
  • Support coordination and scheduling of patch deployments following departmental change control policies and system downtime plans.
  • Assist in the planning, scheduling, and implementation of scheduled downtime activities.
  • Facilitate meetings, capture key points, document decision points and track follow up tasks, communicate and coordinate necessary changes.
  • Develop and document internal procedures to define and support development, testing and production environments and the battery of services supported by the technical team, including but not limited to web services, printing and other system services.
  • Utilize and enhance set standards for naming and numbering conventions and security classifications.
  • Maintain rules for how each new version is released.
  • Collaborate to establish and support change control processes and procedures for the system.
  • Maintain system support documentation.
  • Maintain regular communication with MiChart developers and service customers.
  • Work with vendor representatives and the U-M business community and end users to ensure the system meets the organization’s business needs.
  • Understand the choices involved in service specifications.
  • Perform analysis of workflows, data collection, report details, and other technical issues associated with developing system service enhancements.
  • Investigate end users’ preference while making design decisions.
  • Analyze business operations as they relate to design decisions.
  • Implement requested changes to the system based on assigned prioritization.
  •  Analyze new functionality in releases to determine how it should be used and/or impacts existing functionality.
  • Review software.

  • Gather input from subject matter experts.
  • Collate supporting documentation.
  • Participate in training and work with customers.
  • Troubleshoot problems and questions from customers.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's degree or better in computer science, information systems or a related field, including business information systems course work and 3 – 5 years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. 
  • Requires a combination of strong technical background/knowledge and excellent people skills and verbal/written communication skills.  

Desired Qualifications*

  • Project management, business systems analysis and system experience. 
  • Basic understanding of delivery and support of enterprise class systems and support of the end-user community.
  • Basic understanding of business systems and industry requirements. Includes analysis of business and user needs, documenting requirements, and revising existing system logic difficulties as necessary under direction of experienced Business System Analysts.
  • Working knowledge of general industry practices for managing the deployment of functional configuration build through multiple environments supporting turnkey enterprise class systems.
  • Familiarity with diverse operating environments, applications and equipment.
