Job Summary

The Michigan Center for Translational Pathology (MCTP) is seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist to work with our clinical sequencing group. Our CLIA certified laboratory uses high-throughput technologies to understand the mechanisms of cancer progression, and to develop new prognostic/diagnostic biomarkers of cancer.


The laboratory provides enormous resource and opportunities for an individual to learn traditional cellular/molecular techniques, as well as state-of-the-art technologies, including Next Generation Sequencing and Sanger sequencing. The candidate will work primarily with a group of senior laboratory personnel to assist and collaborate with researchers within the laboratory and beyond. Detailed duties include: Isolate RNAs and DNAs from tissues and blood, prepare samples through PCR and gel electrophoresis for sequencing, check the sample quality via bioanalyzer and QPCR, run the next gen sequencing platform, validate the potential candidate genes by Sanger sequencing and QPCR, write internal research reports summarizing research activities, participate in weekly laboratory meetings, and interact as a team member with laboratory personnel. The candidate should be very familiar and experienced with basic molecular biology and cell biology techniques.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field
  • 1-3 years experience in basic laboratory research
  • Experience in molecular biology and/or biochemistry research laboratory
  • Familiarity with quantitative PCR techniques, molecular cloning and cell culture
  • Willingness to learn new concepts and technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment
  • Strong organization skills, attention to details, very good record keeping skills, and must be able to complete work in a timely manner  

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in biological science preferred.

Additional Information

This position is going to be located within the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology (MCTP). MCTP plans to employ genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatic approaches on clinical biospecimens to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The mission of this Center will be to facilitate the discovery, validation, and implementation of candidate target genes/proteins in disease diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy. The Center plans to employ a multi-disciplinary approach, engaging talent from diverse disciplines ranging from medicine, pathology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, engineering, cytogenetics, and molecular therapeutics.

Background Screening
