The candidate will work closely with the International Center for Automotive Medicine’s (ICAM) Senior Crash Investigator to reconstruct crashes and will investigate motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) in the field as assigned. The candidate will perform data collection, as well as data management and analysis related to crashes and the resulting trauma associated with MVCs. This is an entry-level position and will be ideal for those who have interest in automotive crash investigation, research, data analysis, and reporting.
- Crash Investigation: the candidate will perform crash investigations in the field and will utilize quality controls procedures/standards for all facets of crash investigation.
- Crash Reconstruction: the candidate will reconstruct crashes based on previously collected data. Additionally, the candidate will provide crash reconstruction insights to other researchers.
- Data entry and management: the candidate will populate an existing database regarding crash reconstruction and investigation as related to injury causation/trauma. The candidate should be familiar with data acquisition, entry, and best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree is required in: criminal justice, civil or environmental engineering, urban transportation, traffic control and transportation safety engineering, automotive engineering, or other related field
- 1-3 years of experience in a related field
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Computer literacy
- Flexibility in work schedule to include some evenings, weekends and holiday hours
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Strong initiative and work ethic
- Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks
- Ability to work closely with supervisory personnel as well as senior investigators within the department
- Some experience in insurance fraud, law enforcement, the military, or the automotive industry
- Familiarity with any, or all of the following:
- Collision Deformation Classification (CDC)
- Computerized reconstruction programs used to generate delta-v and/or Equivalent Barrier Speed estimates (crash and trajectory based)
- Vehicle based Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) systems
- Scene evaluation and scaled diagram production
- Knowledge of restraint system design, function, and performance evaluation
- Outdoor/indoor photography skills under various lighting and weather conditions
- Vehicle dynamics during crash sequences
- Occupant kinematics
- Working knowledge of current Crash/Injury databases and sub-components (NASS, CIREN, AIS, ISS, etc.)
