University Outreach is assisting the Shiawassee River Water Trail Coalition in developing a 120 mile water trail, from the headwaters in Holly, MI to Chesaning, MI. This includes applying to the National Park Service for National Water Trail Designation. There are only 18 National Water Trails currently designated in the United States. The National Water Trails System is a distinctive national network of exemplary water trails that are cooperatively supported and sustained. Each of the 18 existing trails are as unique as the landscapes they move through, thus the experiences provided by our Shiawassee River will reflect the interests, assets, and values of the communities through which it flows.
This position will help create maps that promote enjoyable river experiences and can add significantly to a community’s economic health though the popularity of ecotourism, dining and overnighting, outfitting and equipment rentals, skill workshops and downtown shopping and river walks.
