Job Summary

The Stamps School of Art & Design Pre-College Program is looking for Instructional Assistants (IAs) to join our staff this summer.

Instructional Assistants play a critical role in the success of the STAMPS Pre-College Program. IAs support Program Assistants (Instructors) in the classroom by helping with all aspects of instructing students in a studio setting. This includes but is not limited to running errands, setting up and cleaning up the classroom. IAs will engage with all student participants by providing personal guidance on projects and constructive feedback during critique.

IAs are responsible for the health and safety of all participants in the classroom and work in concert with all Pre-College staff to cultivate a supportive and creative learning environment. IAs will help to enforce University of Michigan policy, STAMPS Pre-College rules/protocols and observe the Pre-College Program schedule.

IAs may accompany student participants on weekend excursions to Detroit and other area attractions and/or events.

We are looking for Instructional Assistants to support 10 Studio Sections offered in our two residential programs, BFA Preview and Portfolio Prep.

Candidates should indicate their interest supporting specific classes in a cover letter. Candidates must have experience and/or be open to assisting with a co-taught studio section.

Required Qualifications*

BA/BFA Degree, Leadership/mentorship experience in a professional and/or volunteer capacity, knowledge and passion for art/design, knowledge of the Stamps School of Art & Design and University of Michigan

Work Schedule

BFA Preview / July 10 – July 28 / Monday – Friday / 9AM – 9PM

Drawing Studio (2 Sections)      

Instruction must include life drawing exercises and can include experimental, process-oriented techniques

2D Studio (2 Sections)

Instruction can include exercises in various 2D disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, digital photography

3D Studio (1 Section)

Instruction can include exercises in various 3D disciplines such as sculpture, craft, object design, installation, performance

(*sections of 3D Studio may co-taught by two Program Assistants and focus on collaborative projects)

Portfolio Prep / July 31 – August 11 / Monday – Friday / 9AM – 9PM

Portfolio Studio (2 Sections)      

Instruction must focus on skills necessary to develop, curate and present a student portfolio to admissions counselors

Drawing Studio (2 Sections)

Instruction must include life drawing exercises and can include experimental, process-oriented techniques

3D Studio (1 Section)

Instruction can include exercises in various 3D disciplines such as sculpture, craft, object design, installation

(*sections of 3D Studio may co-taught by two Program Assistants and focus on collaborative projects)

*Saturday – Sunday / hours will vary and will include off campus excursions

Each class section is three hours long and will follow this timetable Mon - Fri:

9:00 am - 12:00 pm             2 Sections

1:00 am - 4:00 pm               2 Sections

6:00 pm - 9:00 pm               1 Section

The class calendar has not been finalized and will depend on the availability of Program Assistants (Instructors).

This is a temporary position that is contingent upon completion of required criminal background screening, as specified in SPG 601.34 (Policy on Minors Involved in University-Sponsored Programs or Programs Held in University Facilities).
