Job Summary

The English Language Institute (ELI), a unit of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, is seeking one or two highly-qualified, experienced instructors of ESL/English for Business Purposes for its English for Business Studies (EBS) summer intensive program. The EBS program is a 5-week experience for students who have been accepted for the fall term into an MBA program at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business or into another competitive MBA program in the U.S.  The primary focus of EBS is on developing the academic language skills and strategies necessary for success in a rigorous MBA program.  The program challenges students with courses and projects designed to reflect current MBA practices. We seek an instructor with expertise in Business Writing.

The Business Writing course focuses on academic written communication essential to participation in a highly-competitive MBA program.  Students learn the skills of summary writing, argumentation, and writing for a particular purpose and audience. They produce a collaborative report, write up case analyses, and work on e-mails, memos, resumes, and cover letters.  Students receive group and individual feedback on their writing, and common grammar trouble spots are reviewed. One or two sections of Business Writing may be offered, based on enrollment.

Responsibilities*

ELI instructors plan and deliver high-quality language instruction following each program’s curricular guidelines and in accordance with best practices in ESL/EAP/ESP instruction. ELI instructors are expected to meet with students outside of class as needed and to provide regular, timely written and oral feedback on all assignments. Participation in student orientation, faculty meetings, and on the student final team project is also required.

Required Qualifications*

Successful candidates will hold a master’s degree or PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or closely related field and have least three years of EAP and/or ESP teaching experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively are also required.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience teaching business writing strongly preferred.
