Job Summary

University Housing, a department within the Division of Student Life at the University of Michigan, seeks a dynamic and collaborative individual for the position of Senior Associate Director of University Housing.  Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the University of Michigan is a leader in undergraduate and graduate education and one of the world’s premier research universities.  The University of Michigan’s size, complexity and academic strength, its impressive array of resources and opportunities, the quality of its faculty and research institutes-all these elements contribute to the rich environment where students learn and challenge themselves as they come into contact with people, cultures and ideas from all over the world.

Reporting to the Senior Director for University Housing and Auxiliary Services, this is a key senior leadership position, with the successful candidate assisting the Senior Director to provide direction and vision to a comprehensive residential life, housing, and residential dining services program with an annual budget exceeding $100 million, housing approximately 10,000 students in residence halls, and approximately 3,000 individuals in apartments.

The Senior Associate Director of University Housing for Residence Life is primarily responsible for the planning, oversight, and the strategic management of the residential life and community development of undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who reside in the University’s residence halls and apartments.  Through our nationally acclaimed living learning communities, new facility initiatives, vast choices to enhance student and community development, University Housing and the Division of Student Life play a significant role in the student experience at the University of Michigan.  Three Senior Associate Directors provide a critical and strategic leadership role in the Division and in ensuring optimal use of departmental resources throughout University Housing to support and enhance program development, facilities initiatives, and the fulfillment of University goals.


  • Provide supervision and general direction to the directors of Undergraduate Residence Education, Graduate Residence Education, Housing Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution to foster an environment that supports the academic mission of the University and supports individual growth and community development. This role indirectly supervises living learning and theme communities.

  • Lead supervisory area in strategic planning efforts, including the annual development of goals and objectives which maximize partnerships, resources, and synergistic relationships throughout University Housing.  The approximate total budget of the supervisory area is approximately $7 million supported by approximately 75 FTE staff.

  • Provide direction and has supervisory responsibility for the quality of student life experienced in a residential program which houses approximately 10,000 students and an approximately 3,000 individuals in 1500 apartments  Supports and provides leadership to initiatives that strengthen co-curricular learning and further prepares students for a complex, intercultural, and changing world as educated, involved citizens, and as leaders.    

  • Ensures a community centered approach through engaging with individual students and meeting with student groups to discuss programs, issues, and opportunities. Provides guidance to student community advisory groups such as the Residence Hall Association and Residents Council. 

  • With the Senior Leadership Team, promotes a client/community centered service model for all departments.  Examples of this model include: (a) collaboration to assure consistent standards and quality service levels, (b) promotion of inclusive workplace climates and living environments that empower students and staff to learn, “own,” and further contribute to our shared success.

  • Oversees responsibility for all finances within the area of supervisory responsibility, provides support and collaboration with all department heads, and serves with the University Housing Senior Leadership Team to provide long and short term fiscal and strategic planning for University Housing.

  • Collaborates, maintains, and initiates partnerships and serves as a critical link and program liaison with other departments in Student Life, external agencies, and other University areas as appropriate.

  • Leads various Student Life and University Housing initiatives and undertakes special projects as assigned by the Senior Director of University Housing. 

  • Serves as a member of the Student Life Leadership Assembly and participates in the development and achievement of strategic goals, objectives, and outcomes assessment.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel, higher education or comparable field, doctoral degree preferred, and a minimum of ten years full time experience with progressively responsible supervisory and management experience in Housing and Residence Life.

  • Strategic thinking and planning skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with students, families, faculty and staff at all levels in a complex and diverse environment.

  • Knowledge of student development, collaborative learning, residence hall/apartment programming, learning communities/special interest housing, diversity and inclusion, and staff development.

  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence. Shows understanding of and appreciation for cultural, ethnic, and individual differences.

  • Strong management and supervisory ability with respect to fiscal, facility, and human resources.  Must be able to manage complex budgets.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in an environment characterized by change.

  • Demonstrated leadership, ability to build effective teams, motivate and supervise staff, and exercise a client/community-centered philosophy.

  • High energy, outcomes directed, and a sense of humor.
