The University of Michigan-Dearborn Writing Center seeks a Writing Center Coordinator. The Writing Center serves all students, faculty, and staff on campus, assisting them with their writing needs for academic and non-academic writing. The Center offers support in all stages of the writing and research process:
Understand assignment goals
Articulate and organize ideas
Formulate an approach to an assignment
See the need for additional evidence
Develop cofidence for new writing tasks
Generate revision strategies
Be aware of audience, purpose, and context
Develop a focus/thesis
Identify and use appropriate resources
Improve control of grammar and mechanics
Become more skilled in using APA, MLA, Chicago and other documentation styles
Supervise tutors, including periodic tutor observations and approving time sheets; advise and mentor tutors; address tutor concerns; identify/develop professional development for tutors
Address student concerns; develop and execute collaborations with departments and programs; address faculty concerns; coordinate classroom visits by tutors (and periodically the Coordinator) to promote the Center and services offered
Work with the Writing Program director and other Composition & Rhetoric faculty in developing programming serving the needs of faculty across campus teaching writing intensive and other courses in the Dearborn Discovery Core (general education program)
Manage and coordinate all office functions, maintain day-to-day operations of Writing Center; prepare schedules for face-to-face and online appointments and other curricular partnerships; maintain and update content for website and social media accounts; contribute to marketing activities; design and produce an annual report
Represent the Writing Center when needed at university meetings and events, occasionally giving remarks
Maintain Writing Center statistics and generate usage reports
Answer phones and sits at the reception desk when tutors are unavailable
Attend one professional development meeting/year paid for by the Dean’s Office
Attend Composition and Rhetoric discipline faculty meetings
Tutor students, particularly during the Spring/Summer terms
Fill in for unexpected tutor absences when necessary
Master’s degree in English or related field with at least one year experience as a writing center tutor.
Experience teaching writing at the undergraduate level
2-3 years of experience managing a staff of 5 or more.
Good organizational skills, time management skills, and the ability to perform multiple tasks.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
ABD of PhD degree in English or Composition and Rhetoric.
2-3 year's experience in a similar position in a writing or tutoring center.
Familiarity with best practices and current trends in the scholarship of writing centers.
Previous pedagogical or professional development activities (conference presentations, publications, etc.) related to writing centers and/or writing across the curriculum.
Experience with developmental writer and/or English Language Learners.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Experience generating spreadsheets and reports.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
Experience with marketing.
Ability to teach Technical and/or Business Writing.
