The Nyman Family Unit for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellness or 8E CAP is a 16 bed acute inpatient psychiatric unit. The unit admits patients who are under the age of 18 and treats all major psychiatric diagnoses.
Care is delivered by an interdisciplinary team which includes Nursing, Social Work, Recreational and Occupational Therapists, Medical Staff.

To assist the department manager in planning and management of the unit and the provision of patient care.
To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research.
To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements.
Reports directly to the Nurse Manager.
Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff, as delegated by Nurse Manager.
Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Nurse Manager.
To provide clinical assessment. Mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.
Management of Clinical Area:
Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures.
Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation.
Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care.
Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
Quality Assurance and Research:
Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
Required Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing.
Minimum three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse on an inpatient psychiatric unit.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including; charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Nurse Manager, supervisor, unit leadership, administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates.
Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer databases. High level of self-motivation and commitment to improving patient outcomes and development of staff.
Evidence of ability to assess, interpret and analyze clinical information.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers and other staff.

Previous supervisory/management experience in inpatient psychiatry.
Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
Knowledge of Lean principles.
Master's degree in Nursing.
Experience with Med/Surg acute inpatient populations.
