Job Summary

The Information and Technology Services (ITS) organization has an exciting opportunity to employ a Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure Team member.  The Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure group is responsible for evaluation, recommendation, design, implementation and ongoing support of Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure services with an eye on ensuring highly automated (DevOps/Orchestration), cost effective, customer/campus focused services exploring technology like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Compute Engine, VMware, OpenStack, etc.

 The Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure team provides support to the application development and support groups and also collaborates with the other groups in the Infrastructure area - networking, data center, storage, security and architecture.  The Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure team member is expected to have, maintain and develop knowledge in multiple technical areas.

 This position will report to the Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure Manager in the ITS Infrastructure group.  This role requires someone who can work under minimal supervision, proactively anticipating and resolving problems, has experience in a role providing excellent customer service, the ability to follow documented procedures and standards in a consistent manne, and has the passion to meet or exceed customer expectations.

Responsibilities*

PRODUCTION SUPPORT (50%)

Provides effective production support for operational activities to ensure highly available, customer focused services including, but not limited to:  




  • Provide Service provisioning and Troubleshooting


  • Write, maintain, patching of applications/code base used to support automation and service delivery


  • Follows procedures and guidelines to install, patch, configure, customize, troubleshoot, upgrade, integrate, and maintain systems, software and network connectivity


  • Supports and collaborates with team members, software vendors and other technical staff on project efforts to achieve implementation plans and timelines


  • Reviews and monitors systems for availability, error conditions and performance monitors to ensure system stability


  • Provide reports and capacity data to support metrics for hardware warranty, software licensing and asset management systems


  • Develops and edits technical support knowledge base documentation, communications and written procedures tailored to the level and type of audience for support and issue resolution


  • Requires on-call avaiability on a team rotation ouside of normal working hours


 SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS (30%)

Leads medium to large service improvements by evaluating, researching, planning and implementation/updates of new or existing technologies and processes to Virtualization/Cloud Infrastructure and services which may include but are not limited to the following:




  • Identify gaps in established procedures/processes make recommendations for implementing improvements


  • Review technical designs/architecture across platforms comparing them to vendor/industry roadmaps/trends to identify strengths weaknesses and opportunities to re-design, update or improve Services/technical designs/architecture


  • Identifies areas of service improvements and potential future enhancements based on customer requests and feedback


 PROJECT MANAGEMENT (10%)

Leads medium to large projects to ensure effective communication and collaboration across the organization while delivering successful completion of projects on time/budget which may include: but are not limited to the following:




  • Prioritize and manage the execution of the resources to the project


  • Develop implementation plans and timelines of projects, provide status reports, exchange relevant information with management and project teams, and meet time lines


  • Provide accurate time estimates for tasks, identify the teams involved, and notify management of potential risks and issues


 DEVELOPMENT OF SELF AND OTHERS (5%)

Stays current with relevant advances in technologies. Responsible for maintaining and updating knowledge of IT policies and procedures, hardware, software, and technical services.  This can include: on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, reading, research and testing.  Develops and follows best practices and procedures and share knowledge with team members.




  • Demonstrates skill development by actively participating in growth opportunities for continuous development and improvement and applying new skills/knowledge to the job as evident by the ability to efficiently and effectively perform assigned duties, resulting in meeting or exceeding customer expectations and performance metrics


  • Demonstrates effective communication skills when providing training and mentoring to less experienced staff, resulting in staff and teams using and implementing the latest policies, procedures, and best practices to accomplish tasks.


 LEADERSHIP (5%)

This position may hand out work to more junior staff and review that work. Lead by example, demonstrating organizational values and behaviors and fostering collaborative relationships.

Required Qualifications*



  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, certification and experience 


  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, analysis, problem solving and working independently to successfully implement Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure services. Administration, automation and support of some or all of the following: VMware, AWS, vCenter, openstack, Azure, Google Compute engine


  • Proficient in one or more programming languages, scripting languages or automation platforms including but not limited to: Python, Javascript, powershell etc.


  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot difficult issues,and problem solving skills with a focus on process improvement and/or automation.


  • Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed manner, skillfully manage complex projects and stay up-to-date with the latest industry developments and best practices and apply the knowledge in the workplace


  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in technical concepts both verbally and in writing to teams and customers


  • Demonstrated ability to manage medium to large projects 


 Preferred Qualifications:




  • Experience directly suporting DevOps process or tools
