Job Summary

This position will have two distinct but overlapping responsibilities. About 50% of the time will be allocated to the duties of a study coordinator for clinical research and the remaining 50% will be allocated to the duties of a laboratory research assistant.

Responsibilities*

Study Coordination:

The study coordinator will be responsible for study subject enrollment activities including communicating with potential study subjects in person, by phone, e-mail and postal mail, explaining the study to participants and administering Informed Consent, scheduling and coordinating clinic visits, assisting the physician in clinic procedures, drawing blood samples from study subjects, keeping detailed logs of study subject interactions, and associated tasks.

Laboratory assistant:

The work involves identification of genes involved in inherited skin diseases. Specific duties for this position would include preparation of DNA and RNA from skin biopsies, blood and cell lines, PCR-based marker typing of DNA, preparation of libraries for high throughput sequencing, general molecular biology procedures such as PCR and electrophoresis, operation of robotic and other laboratory equipment, DNA sequencing, computer data entry, ordering laboratory supplies, and other general laboratory work.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. Excellent communication skills. Routine blood draw from study participants is required. Phlebotomy training will be provided.

Desired Qualifications*

1-2 years of experience in a molecular biology or biochemistry research laboratory.
