Job Summary

The Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) is the nation's leading university-based institute of over 480 health services researchers evaluating how health care works and how it can be improved, and advising policy makers to inform change. IHPI researchers consistently produce leading research in the world that is published in top tier academic journals and featured in mainstream media outlets such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Forbes. This position will have a profound impact on developing the brand of IHPI as a national and worldwide leader in healthcare policy and research.

IHPI seeks a motivated and experienced multimedia design specialist to support advancement of IHPI's mission to improve the quality, safety, equity and affordability of healthcare. The successful candidate will be skilled in integrating various design techniques and utilizing a variety of approaches to convey complex, scientific research in a concise and straightforward format to lay audiences, particularly media and policymakers. Two key areas of focus of this new position for IHPI will be: 1) the creation of “visual abstracts” summarizing research results in one, two or three frames for social media; and, 2) development of info-graphics to depict findings from a monthly national poll on healthy aging.

The individual will join a team of marketing communications and public relations professionals. Resources will be made available to support further professional development in design including sponsorship to attend relevant workshops and present work at national forums. This position reports to the Communications Manager.

Responsibilities*

  • Design and deploy marketing communications tools and finished products across multiple forms of media, such as: high-end print, web, video, social media, and PowerPoint.

  • Create multimedia designs in liaison with internal and external owners/stakeholders, programmers, writers, video producers, and artists

  • Translate complex project requirements, schedules, objectives and expected outcomes into effective tools that add value. Pitch multiple options for design direction for projects.

  • Combine text, image, and GIFs to design layouts that create engaging multimedia experiences

  • Conduct visual research to find best approaches to story telling in multiple communication channels

  • Regularly research best practices for graphics outreach in higher education and healthcare.

  • Ensure adherence of all projects to IHPI's global image and brand standards, maintaining consistency across communication platforms.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree in Multimedia Design, Graphic Design, Marketing or other related field, combined with a minimum of 4 years of design experience, preferably within the healthcare industry.

  • Proficient in current video, web and multimedia technologies, including both leading software applications and Web tools.

  • Proficiency with industry-standard design concepts and software, including but not limited to, Adobe Professional suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and After Effects, and/or other animation software, and familiarity with digital photography.

  • Proficiency with social media, including Twitter, LinkedIn, and others.

  • Strong design portfolio displaying skills and abilities with examples and links to relevant works.

  • Experience in creating design projects for distribution across multiple communications platforms.

  • Ability to meet to with academic researchers, discuss key points of their work, and effectively story board a visual narrative of their findings to a lay and policy minded audience.

  • Creativity and a willingness to learn new design techniques and social media platforms.

  • An understanding of branding, marketing, and consumer behavior and the ability to apply that knowledge to design.

  • Attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, a collaborative working style, and flexibility involving having work edited by stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to balance utility and aesthetics while applying design principles and branding.

  • Ability to problem-solve, pay close attention to detail, and perform in a self-directed and well-organized manner.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, take initiative and work effectively under tight deadlines and changing project requirements.
