Job Summary

The Department of Dermatology is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity in patient care: Medical Assistant/Medical Scribe. Multiple open positions are available for qualified staff who are looking to be an integral part of the patient care team at our Taubman Dermatology ACU, or Livonia ACU. The Department of Dermatology at Livonia is the newest Dermatology Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU), opening later this year, dedicated to providing high quality dermatologic services, located at 19900 Haggerty Road #105, Livonia MI 48152. We are actively seeking compassionate, enthusiastic, and patient-oriented individuals who will share in the goal of creating the ideal experience for our patients, families, and employees.


Please note that this position will act as a Medical Assistant Associate and a Medical Scribe.

When acting in the Medical Assistant capacity, you will perform a full compliment of medical assistant duties. This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with faculty, residents, advanced practice professionals, and medical assistant/nursing staff to ensure optimal patient care.

  • Assist with complex procedures. Collect and label specimens.

  • Provide routine, but complex instructions for patient procedures and treatments, as delegated by providers and nurses.

  • Patient intake; review and update MiChart as directed.

  • Maintain outside labs. Problem solve issues related to the retrieval of medical information.

  •  Patient follow-up for normal and low complexity test resutls as directed by provider.

  • Assist providers with management of point-of-care alerts for services due.

When acting in the Medical Scribe capacity, you will perform a full compliment of medical scribe duties. This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • The primary responsibility of the medical scribe is to accurately transcribe patient visits and procedures into MiChart.

  • Under provider instruction, call in prescriptions.

  • Assist with accurate charge entry and billing.

  • Retrieve existing information within a patient's chart at provider request. Problem solve issues related to the retrieval of medical information.

  • Ensure outside records/consents/prior authorizations/etc. are imaged and added to the patient's record.

  • When instructed, utilize Epic applications (e.g., Haiku/Canto) to capture clinical images.

  • Use smart tools in MiChart to improve efficiency/accuracy of documentation.

  • Assist with training of new Medical Scribes.

When acting as a Medical Assistant or Medical Scribe, you will always have the following responsibilities:

  • Assure efficient clinic flow.

  • Demonstrate positive customer service approaches, and serve as a role model, when dealing with patients, families, or staff.

  • Prepare exam rooms; clean/wrap surgiceal instruments for sterilization.

  • Assist with maintaining supply inventory/stocking. Maintain equipment.

  • Report incidents/problems in a timely manner to leadership.

  • Lead emergency procedures if a medical emergency arises.

  • Develop/recommend changes to improve quality of patient care. Participate in QI initiatives.

  • Provide for safety of self and others by adherence to safety guidelines, polices, and practices.

  • Protect and respect patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA.

  • Review current medical assistant, medical scribe, and other professional literature. Attend appropriate continuing education/staff development.

  • Maintain Mandatories.

Required Qualifications*

High school diploma/equivalent. Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program; certification as a Medical Assistant, including clinical externship. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Moderate standing/walking, lifting. Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team setting, maintaining professional demeanor. Communicates effectively. Demonstrates active listening, written, verbal, and information technology skills. Excellent attention to detail. Very adept with computeres/new platforms. Familiarity with EHRs. Excellent attendance record. Ability to type 50+wpm in a fast-paced, noisy environment.

Desired Qualifications*

1+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant and/or Medical Scribe. Knowledge of UM policies/procedures. Ability to type 80+wpm in a fast-paced, noisy environment. Experience in dermatology, and familiarity with dermatologic terminology, diagnoses, and treatments. Experience in an outpatient clinical setting, and experience using MiChart preferred. An Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in healthcare or related field.

Work Schedule

Work schedule may vary during the orientation training process from schedule at assigned ACU (Taubman or Livonia).

Work Locations

  • Positions may be located at either the Taubman ACU or Livonia ACU. 

  • Training may be held at multiple locations including the Taubman Dermatology ACU and Domino's Farms Dermatology ACU for the first few months of the position.

Additional Information

Successful completion of a typing test will be required for placement into this position.
