Job Summary

The Biomedical Research Core Facilities DNA Sequencing Laboratory is looking for a skilled research technician to join us, full time, as a Research Laboratory Specialist. The incumbent will be responsible for library production for Illumina next generation sequencing platforms from DNA and RNA samples submitted by clients. Various quality control assays will be performed in addition to implementation of new protocols for DNA and RNA library preparation and sequencing, with a focus on high-throughput process development.

Responsibilities*

  • Preparation of DNA and RNA libraries for next generation sequencing
  • Performing quality control assays on samples submitted for library preparation, on client prepared libraries and on core prepared libraries
  • Assessing qPCR results for pooling and determination of library concentrations for sequencing
  • Illumina instrument operation responsibilities include setting up runs, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Monitoring sequencing run performance and data quality metrics
  • Communication with clients regarding QC; documentation of client requests
  • Utilization and development of programs on the Eppendorf epMotion automated liquid handler
  • Additional responsibilities include inventory management and general lab maintenance

Required Qualifications*

A minimum of 8 years of research experience with 3-4 years of next generation sequencing library experience. A bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology or related biomedical field.  
 
A successful candidate must have hands on experience in both library preparation and instrument operation on one of the Illumina platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq, HiSeq). Proficiency and comfort with computer-based operation is a requirement of the position, including typical office software (MS Word, MS Excel). 
 
A successful candidate must be meticulous both at the lab bench and with record keeping skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a diverse environment while under pressure to produce results in a timely manner is a must. Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English.  

Desired Qualifications*

Experience developing an inventory management system, high-throughput process experience and experience working as part of a team in a service lab environment.

Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
