Job Summary

Under direct supervision from the Nurse Manager or designee, the CVCOR PT Supervisor meets all the  requirements of the Patient Care Tech Associate- Operating Room Job Description.  The PT Supervisor also supervises the work of CVCOR PT’s; is responsible for the consistent orientation of new CVCOR PT’s following the current processes, protocols, competencies and expectations; ensures CVCOR PT’s complete all annual competencies; rounds routinely to ensure work is completed; works collaboratively with Nurse Manager/ designee in screening, interviewing and selecting new CVCOR PT staff as well as participates in performance reviews and corrective action plans as indicated.


  • Works with department leadership to schedule and assign PT staff to ensure coverage on all shifts, have available standby call shifts covered, and assist in problem solving PT staffing issues.
  • Ensures a PT huddle is completed each day with off-going and on-coming PT staff to build team work and ensure follow-up on work issues are completed.
  • Works with department leadership and PT’s to screen, interview and select PT staff.
  • Orients all new PT staff to the OR dept. ensuring required mandatory training, PT competencies and orientation checklists are completed and documented within required timeframe.
  • Notifies the Nurse manager/ designee of any/ all performance or behavioral concerns immediately so intervention/ corrective action can be implemented. Participates with Nurse Manager/ designee in probationary period review meeting and documenting goals for the next year.
  • Actively participates in department activities and meetings. Meets with PT staff monthly. This includes preparing an agenda and documenting meeting minutes within 5 business days so all PT’s have the information.
  • Oversees the tracking, proper care and cleaning of lead PPE, i.e. lead aprons, vests, skirts, gloves, collars, etc. Ensures PT’s support the consistent monitoring and proper handling when storing lead items.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities to ensure proper use and maintenance. Support the education of other staff in ensuring safe care and use of equipment.
  • Prepares, reviews existing, and develops training materials for PTs. These may include, but are not limited to: new equipment, procedures, processes, competencies, in-services, training materials, instructional guides/ algorithms, etc., and works with staff clinical experts and vendor reps. as needed to support and promote ongoing PT skills and knowledge.
  • Assists department in maintaining “regulatory survey readiness” consistently.
  • Supports Performance/ Quality Improvement activities of the department that include, but are not limited to: hand hygiene, first case in room starts, reducing room turnover between cases, reducing case delays, etc. This is based on the PI/QI department plan.
  • Works with Nurse Manager/ designee to complete annual performance reviews of OR PT’s.
  • Is visible in the department and participates in the daily work to ensure correct completion in a timely manner.    
  • Supports department efforts to reduce costs, increase efficiencies, and create standard work which may include LEAN processes.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.   

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow directions in stressful situations, excellent customer service skills and ability to multitask, set priorities, and work effectively in a team.
  • Meet physical demand criteria of the role which include, but are not limited to: standing 85% of shift; able to lift 25 lbs.; can stoop, bend over, squat, carry, and reach above head; push large bulky equipment, beds, and gurneys effectively; support patients to prevent falls/ injury; assist in patient positioning using proper body mechanics; and the ability to perform effective chest compressions as directed during emergencies).  
  • Supervisor shall have the knowledge and operational understanding of University Health System, Surgical Services and CVCOR policies, procedures, protocols, and practices as well as regulatory requirements.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of a certified nurse or medical assistant program.  (Certification preferred). 
  • (or) Junior status in an accredited BSN program
  • (or) 2nd year in accredited ADN program
  • (or) Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Medical Science;
  • (or) a 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital setting
  • basic computer skills; course work in an Allied Health field.
