Job Summary

The University of Michigan Library human resources team is seeking an innovative and service-oriented intern who is seeking experience in the areas of staffing, data management and staff development coordination.  This role will also work with HR staff on special projects and be responsible for providing HR customer service to our library community. This position receives direction from other HR staff members and directly reports to the human resources coordinator. The HR intern is involved in department planning and meetings to gain exposure to recruiting, compensation, organizational and staff development, on-boarding, and data analysis projects.

The human resources department for the University of Michigan Library is dedicated to advancing the mission of the library through partnership and service with our approximately 500 colleagues in multiple roles and locations. We partner strategically throughout the employment lifecycle and provide consultative services, as we recruit, develop, retain, advocate for and support our colleagues.

Responsibilities*

Recruitment

  • Support development of candidate pipelines for job openings

  • Review and upload resumes under direction of recruiter

  • Assist in scheduling and implementation of recruiting and onboarding events

 

Performance Management

  • Assist in tracking annual performance management documentation and data

  • Coordinate outgoing communications and resources provided to staff

  • Prepare and organize training and event materials

 

Data Management

  • Conduct web research and benchmarking related to compensation philosophy and career paths

  • Utilize systems such as Service Link, eRecruit and Peoplesoft M-Pathways to process and maintain student employee appointments under direction of HR Coordinator

  • Work with data and prepare charts and graphs to support data analysis and decisions

  • Learn and ensure compliance with University of Michigan policies and procedures

 

Office Assistance

  • Create, maintain, and audit employee personnel files

  • Perform reception for library HR and administrative offices as needed

  • Answer inquiries in person, by email or by phone from faculty, staff, students, or guests

Additional projects in areas like compensation, practice development and organizational development may be available based on areas of interest and department need.

Required Qualifications*

  • Recent BA in Human Resources or Organizational Studies or currently attaining

  • Ability to manage confidential information

  • Ability to do detailed work with accuracy and care

  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment

  • Regular and predictable attendance

  • Proficient time management skills

  • Highly organized and process oriented

  • Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s level work in Human Resources or Organizational Studies graduate or currently attaining

  • Prior work experience in an HR office

  • Intermediate to advanced level experience with Excel (familiarity with Pivot tables, VLookup and other advanced Excel features a plus)

  • Availability to continue assignment through Fall 2017

Work Schedule

Flexible based on candidates availability up to 25 hours per week during the hours of 8am-5pm, desired through August 2017.
