The University of Michigan’s School of Information seeks applicants for a postdoctoral research fellow, starting in Fall 2017. The postdoctoral research fellow will work with Dr. Patricia Garcia on an NSF-funded project investigating how culturally responsive approaches to computing education may positively impact learning experiences for girls from marginalized groups, such as racial and ethnic minorities.
The postdoctoral research fellow will collaborate on a project titled “Developing a Culturally Responsive Framework for Promoting Computing Among Adolescent Girls in STEM Programs,” which is funded by the National Science Foundation. The project is a data sharing initiative with Black Girls Rock!, a nonprofit youth empowerment organization. The aim of the project is to develop a culturally responsive computing framework that can be used by practitioners and community organizations who are designing and implementing STEM programs for girls from marginalized groups. The current phase of the project focuses on analyzing a data set composed of girls’ responses to semistructured questions related to their identities and future plans for academic and professional success. The postdoctoral research fellow will play a lead role in the following activities: 1) qualitative data analysis and collection; 2) dissemination of findings in peer-reviewed publications and conferences; 3) planning of a workshop titled “Culturally Responsive Approaches to Computing Education; and 4) mentoring of undergraduate students participating in the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.
- PhD awarded by anticipated start date (Fall 2017) in fields such as information studies, learning sciences, computer science education, STEM learning, gender studies, feminist STS, or other related disciplines.
- Experience with ethnographic research and/or qualitative methods
- Strong publication record
- Commitment to work collaboratively on research and writing
- Strong interest in issues related diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM, especially computing
- Strong interest in exploring the intersections between race, gender, and technology
- Familiarity with theories and approaches such as intersectionality and culturally responsive pedagogy
- Experience collaborating with community organizations
- Interest in merging computing and cultural practices
The research will take place at the School of Information at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Occasional travel to Brooklyn and Washington D.C. to meet with collaborators will be expected.
This position will begin in Fall 2017 and comes with competitive salary and benefits, as well as travel funding to disseminate findings at academic conferences. This position is a 12-month appointment, with possible extension assuming satisfactory performance and availability of work.
At the University of Michigan, the postdoctoral research fellow will be part of an interdisciplinary research community at the School of Information and will work collaboratively with other members of the Culturally Responsive Computing Lab (CRC Lab), an interdisciplinary research group that brings together scholars from the fields of education and information studies.
