2017 MHSPEA Student Services Assistant I (Chief Student Leader)

The Office for Health Equity and Inclusion is looking for a dynamic Chief student leader to serve as supervisor to academy counselor/resident advisors for the Michigan Health Science Pre-College Exposure Academy (MHSPEA) at the University of Michigan.  The MHSPEA is a two-week entry level residential academic enrichment program. The MHSPEA brings together highly motivated rising 10th and 11th grade high school students to gain exposure to the University Michigan and UMMS.  Participants will take college prep courses taught by experts in the field such as: English, Chemistry, Biology, Math, and Intro to College and ACT preparation.  Students will participate in workshops on health dipartites, health equity, intro to research, and academic wellness.  Students will take tours of the UMMS, UM Hospital, UM Central Campus and the Washtenaw County Community.

The Chief student leader is required to stay in the residence hall with student leaders and participants and provide support to student leader staff in addition to one-on-one and small group mentoring, academic coaching, and intellectual and social stimulation to the program participants.  

Job Description

Provide leadership and supervision to 5 student leaders.


Assist with development and implementation of student leader 1-week orientation.


Provide administrative and organizational support to program coordinator and program manager.


Effectively communicate with parents, student leaders, and OHEI staff and leadership.


Work closely with program instructors, providing administrative support.


Provide direction and counsel to MHSPEA students, assisting them to meet their academic, personal, and career goals as a potential college bound student.


Serve as an academic and social role model, and mentor.


Plan and facilitate individual and group meetings/class sessions for MHSPEA students.


Lead and assist students on outings.


Serve as a Resident Advisor (RA).  Duties may include: Enforce Resident Hall Community Living Standards and report violations to University Housing authorities: (RA, and Summer Hall Director)


Refer with urgency any individual and/or group concerns related to MHSPEA students to Program Manager.


Attend all MHSPEA events and activities.


Perform other duties, as assigned to accommodate the program coordinator and program manager.

Job Requirements

Current UM Graduate student


1-2 years’ experience supervising or managing a group


Strong communication and organizational skills


Previous Residence Hall Advisor (RA), or camp counseling experience and/or similar leadership experiences


Experience working with students ages 13 – 17


Experience working with parents of students ages 13-17


Experience teaching, program development or facilitating group discussions


Experience mentoring students


Have an interest in pre-health or health care fields


Taking spring/summer classes will not permitted
