Job Summary

UM-Dearborn has an exciting opportunity for a Coordinator of Veteran Affairs.  This new position will be under the supervision of the University Registrar located within Enrollment Management and Student Life (EMSL), and responsible for assisting U.S. military, active duty/veterans, reservists, and dependents.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn is one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan. UM-Dearborn is a comprehensive university offering high quality undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education to residents of southeast Michigan, and attracts more than 9,000 students. The campus is strategically located on 200 suburban acres of the original Henry Ford Estate in the Greater Detroit Metropolitan region.

The Coordinator of Veteran Affairs will advocate for, provide, and coordinate the necessary support services for the successful operation of the Office of Veterans Affairs (OVA). The incumbent will perform a variety of administrative functions and will work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, and students in promoting student academic and personal achievement within a student-centered environment. Additionally, this individual will coordinate a comprehensive and collaborative campus-wide effort to maximize the recruitment, retention, and graduation of veterans, military personnel and their families.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to acquire thorough knowledge of the OVA purpose, goals and objectives.
  • Ability to acquire considerable knowledge of the laws and regulations which impact the OVA.
  • Ability to acquire wide knowledge of the higher education system and the function of institutions of higher learning.
  • Ability to acquire basic knowledge of college policies and procedures.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the state agencies, federal, state and local governments and private organizations that have a working relationship with veterans.
  • Ability to comply with procedures which insure appropriate confidentiality of program records and activities.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships and coordinate with other offices or organizations that impact on or relate to the work of the OVA.
  • Ability to advise and counsel students and others concerned with the functions of the OVA.
  • Ability to develop and recommend program policies.
  • Ability to prepare and/or direct the preparation of clear reports and studies that include findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to prepare clear and detailed correspondence.
  • Ability to speak in public.
  • Ability to represent the college at conferences, seminars or meetings.

Responsibilities*

The successful Coordinator of Veteran Affairs will:

  • Counsel active duty, veterans, and dependents regarding: the application process, regulations, deadlines, supporting documents, payment processes, verifications, and eligible programs
  • Prepare reports to show the effectiveness of the OVA operations
  • Identifying and developing new opportunities within the veteran market
  • Working with veteran and government educational leadership to ensure that the College's programs are meeting current needs. Once needs are identified work with College leadership to ensure these needs are met
  • Coordinate all outreach activities to include trade shows, career fairs, workshops, education fairs and special events
  • Acts as a liaison between various veteran organizations and UM-Dearborn
  • Is one of the University’s representatives to the various veteran education organizations and other appropriate organizations
  • prepare veteran projections for both enrollment and revenue
  • Work with relevant enrollment offices to develop and implement strategies to enroll and retain highly successful student veterans
  • Work with appropriate University offices to create and deliver meaningful and relevant orientation programming for new and transfer undergraduate, graduate and professional student veterans
  • Partner with the VA School Certifying Officials assist students with understanding and obtaining educational benefits, and assist in identifying financial resources available to qualifying students
  • Work with Career Services to generate and promote employment opportunities both on and off-campus that utilize the unique skills and training of student veterans
  • Work with Counseling & Disability Services, to create, promote, and deliver services and programs that meet the specialized needs of student veterans
  • Appropriately refer student veterans experiencing difficulty to the appropriate University service
  • Perform outreach to students included in the Early Warning process
  • Assist student veterans with filing of disability documentation and advocate on behalf of their special needs;
  • Work with the Provosts Office to provide training and educational opportunities for faculty to work with and learn about veterans issues and best practices
  • Establish contacts with local universities and community colleges for recruiting and establishing resources for Veteran Students
  • Develop contacts with community agencies, medical and mental health agencies, the VA, state and federal leaders/organizations serving veterans

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • A master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Affairs, Counseling, or other related area is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of veteran affairs/services
  • A highly qualified candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Qualified candidates will have a broad knowledge base of Veteran and Military Administration policies and procedures, with knowledge regarding tuition assistance programs including the Montgomery GI Bill, Post 911 GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Chapter 33. Knowledge of grants and scholarships for veterans and family members is required.
  • The ability and experience to handle complex and sensitive issues and situations;
  • Proven ability to perform multi-tasks, meet deadlines, and establish/maintain effective working relationships; computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft office.
  • Familiarity with a student information system and defense department MOU’s and Principles of Excellence are a plus.
