Job Summary

This is a 12 month Nurse Practice Academy position which prepares new Graduate Nurses for a Registered Nurse position in the Central Staffing Resource Department in the Pediatric Critical Care units: (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU), and Brandon (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) and 11W Moderate Care is expected.
Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted clinical experience.
An eighteen (18) to twenty-four (24) month commitment to the CSR department is required after graduation from the academy. 
 
Orientation will be to three different Pediatric Critical Care Units in the cluster.  It will occur primarily on days and nights. Towards the end of year one, staffing to all 3 units will occur using the daily staffing process in CSR. After completing the NPA experience, the CSR quarterly bonus would apply (see contract paragraph 185A).
 
This posting will be used to fill Four (4) Graduate Nurse Practice Academy positions in the Central Staffing Resource Department.  These positions will have an approximate start date of 08/07/2017.

Required Qualifications*

  • Candidate must be a newly licensed Registered Nurse, who has not practiced or has less than one (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Candidate must have completed a BSN program and have successfully passed N-CLEX exam.
  • Senior level clinical experience, 1-2 semesters, in advanced nursing skills course (complex care, transition, internship, leadership) in a Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, Acute Care Pediatric unit or ICU float pool.
            OR
  • Externship experience in a Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU or Acute Care Pediatric unit.
            OR
  • Significant work experience as a Nurse Aide/Assistant/ICU tech in a Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU or Acute Care Pediatric unit.

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 36 hours per week; Ability to work up to 40 hours/week during orientation to complete classwork and assignments
Shift/Hours/Days: 12-hour (7pm to 7:30 am) permanent night shift assignments will occur after completion of the Nursing Practice Academy experience

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

NPA candidates will not be subject to a rate that is 5% lower than their established step rate for being in a formal training/internship program as per Para 295A-g and after completing the NPA, the CSR quarterly bonus would apply as per Para 185A.
