University of Michigan GEAR UP provides college readiness programming to a cohort of students as they matriculate from 7th grade through their freshman year in college. In partnership with other institutions we work with school communities to provide the best academic, social and personal skills for post-secondary readiness. As the GEAR UP office assistant, you will support the Project Director and other coordinating staff by keeping up with routine office tasks and projects.
This position includes assisting the Director, and program staff with GEAR UP events, projects by preparing necessary materials, annotating articles and working on projects and presentations. Responsibilities include completing reading assignments and producing scholarly summaries, data entry, transcribe data for research projects, organize and maintain electronic and paper filing and storage systems, perform errands that assist general functions, answering telephones, greet and assist office guests, forward inquiries to appropriate staff, update/modify complex excel sheets, copy materials, create files and folders, running errands, and other tasks as assigned. The employee may also be assigned to other projects that support the work of the OAMI including providing administrative support for general, day to day operations of the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives.
We seek an intern who is self-motivated, energetic and willing to grow in the profession. A successful candidate will have stron communication skills. Must be capable of exercising initiative and possess a positive service oriented attitude and follow through to plan, organize and manage a diverse workload with excellent attention to detail, and an ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner. Consistent attendance, dependability, and punctuality and reliability are essential. Some college and experience in an office setting are necessary. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are expected. Familiarity with multiple Internet browsers and effective Internet research abilities, organization, resourceful, flexible in a changing environment, and willing to learn new things. Must demonstrate the ability to undertake multiple tasks at the same time and be able to prioritize among those multiple projects with a high value placed on detail and accuracy. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are preferred. Employee in this position must be able to take initiative and think creatively in order to solve problems with minimal supervision. Good communication skills and commitment to demonstrating exceptional office etiquette are needed.
