The Division of Gastroenterology is seeking a qualified physician assistant (PA) to join our subspecialty team of physicians, PAs, nurses, medical assistants, clerks and study coordinators in the chronic disease management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The PA will work in the outpatient setting with faculty and requires participating in a number of clinics including the Taubman Northville, Brighton, Canton, West Ann Arbor or potentially other Health Centers. Care will be provided through a shared visit model and as proficiency increases, transition to a mixture of shared, directed and independent visits.
Assist physicians in providing comprehensive IBD care to patients and their families. Perform histories and physical examinations. Order and interpret laboratory, radiographic, and endoscopic testing. Prescribe medications. Make internal/external referrals. Compile and document notes for the medical record. Be available to assist and advise nurse/MA for urgent between-visit matters such as signing of forms and managing infusion reactions.
Present pertinent data and collaborate with physicians for the devising and implementing of ongoing treatment plans, as required by patient acuity and complexity. Educate and discuss with patients regarding the natural history of the disease, goals of treatment, current and past responses to therapies, results of testing, and subsequent options/recommendations for further formulation of individualized treatment plans.
Participate in weekly IBD meetings to continually improve care standards including clinical, research, and multidisciplinary aspects. Engage in continuing education/professional development activities to increase knowledge and maintain role competency.
- Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies (CAHEA, CAAHEP)
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Current license to practice as a PA in the State of Michigan This classification requires Primary Source Verification.
- Current DEA license as well as Michigan Controlled Substance License (or eligibility for both)
