Job Summary

The University of Michigan Center for Health Communications Research (CHCR) seeks an innovative Deputy Director who will thrive in a high-energy, cutting edge, project-based environment. CHCR was designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Center of Excellence in Cancer Communications Research and also serves as the Health Communications Core for the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our active portfolio typically includes over 20 projects addressing a range of health conditions and issues in diverse populations and settings. The Deputy Director will report to the Center Director, Dr. Lawrence An, and co-director, Dr. Sarah Hawley. He or she will provide strategic planning, collaborative relationship development, and operational management for a creative, high-performing interdisciplinary health software development team comprising professionals in health communications, behavioral science, creative design, and software. The deputy director will work with the co-directors and departmental team leads to do the following:

Strategic Planning. Assist the co-directors in strategic planning and development of long-term research goals of the Center. Synthesize innovative advances in the Health IT space into coherent plans to achieve Center goals.

Collaborative Relationships. Manage ongoing relationships with collaborators and the Center. Proactively reach out to innovative researchers in the field of health communications; establish key academic and business partnerships; vet project proposals for viability and alignment with CHCR research agenda.

Operations. Develop, implement, and maintain administrative policies and procedures to enhance client and employee satisfaction. Oversee Center workforce management (hiring, evaluation, promotion) and handle personnel/staff issues ; manage and coach group leaders; develop, improve, and maintain tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the Center.

Finances. Oversee the financial management of the Center; work with the financial manager to monitor, forecast, and respond to overall financial status; advise the co-directors on financial implications for the near and longer term; approve spending.

Grant Management. Manage the preparation of proposals and budgets. Track proposals throughout the submission and review process. Oversee post-award grant execution, including financial and programmatic reporting to funders.

Liaison. Act as liaison between CHCR and other administrative partners (Cancer Center, Medical School, School of Public Health, Institute for Health Care Policy and Innovation). Participate as a member of the Cancer Center management team.

Required Qualifications*

Senior Level:

  • Master’s degree in administration, health, communications, software engineering, information science, or relevant field or a bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of experience.
  • At least 7 years’ experience managing a project-based, multidisciplinary team with multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment

Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in administration, health, communications, software engineering, information science, or relevant field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience managing a project-based, multidisciplinary team with multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment

Additional requirements

  • Extensive experience overseeing multiple budgets and complex finances
