Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint Department of Music seeks a lecturer to teach the following:

 

MUS 185 Music in Early Childhood (Fall 2017)

•This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 -12:15.

 

•Course Description: Study of musical growth and development in children from birth through kindergarten, as well as various techniques, materials, and methods for introducing music to children. This course is highly recommended for early childhood education concentrations; however, no prior music experience is necessary. Also listed as ECE 120.

 

MUS 381 Teaching General Music, Grades K-8 (Winter 2018)

 •This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 -12:15.

 

•Course Description: Development of essential competencies for teaching elements of music, music literacy, movement and music, listening activities, and works appropriate for grades K-8. Discussion of current methodologies, national standards in music education and modes of assessment are expected. Observations to be arranged and supervised in various school music situations. Also listed as EDE 346.

 

EDE 469/SEC 469 Student Teacher Supervision (Fall 2017 and Winter2018)

•Course Description: Full-time teaching internship in a classroom for 14 weeks under the joint supervision of University and K-12 personnel. Additional clinical experiences and independent study may be required on an individual basis where deemed necessary by University and/or school personnel. Graded Pass/Fail

 

Additional Information: EDE 469/SEC 469 -Student teacher supervision takes place in the field at schools in and around Flint, and consists of at least 6 visits two of which are extended. Observation times are set based on mutual convenience of supervisor, mentor teacher, and student teacher. Includes periodic attendance at SEC 499, Student Teacher Seminar.

•Fall 2017 semester begins September 1, 2017 and ends December 31, 2017.

•Winter 2018 semester begins January 1, 2018 and ends April 30, 2018.

 

•Minimum Salary for this position is $3,413

Required Qualifications*

  • Expertise in teacher education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of course content
  • Experience teaching at the university level 
  • 3-5 years experience teaching elementary general music in schools

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. preferred, ABD considered;
  • Experience supervising student teachers preferred

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
