A total of two (2), Advanced Practice Professionals (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.


  • Under physician supervision, coordinates the care Adult/Late Adult patients admitted to the Cardiac Surgery Service and evaluates cardiac surgery consults.  Specifically, the role requires the clinician to:
  • Manage post-cardiac surgery patients in a telemetry/set-down setting.
  • Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks associated with patients undergoing Cardiac Surgery including heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices;
  • Evaluate cardiac surgery consults (ED and inpatients);
  • Complete detailed histories and physicals and present pertinent data to the medical staff;
  • Collect and interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies;
  • Order tests and prescribe medications;
  • Perform limited diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor surgical procedures;
  • Assist attending physician in orientation of new resident physicians to the service and assist in maintaining continuity of care throughout the Cardiovascular Center.   
  • Confer with attending physicians and communicate with other care providers/consultants to coordinate clinical care.
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatment. 
  • Streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including writing discharge orders and communicating specific patient needs to team members. 
  • Participate in peer evaluations and quality assurance activities, support research projects and any other initiative deemed necessary and in the best interest of patient care.  Perform other related duties as required. 
  • Utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.

Required Qualifications*


  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Nurse Practitioner. 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).   
  • ACLS certification (completed by start date).
  • Experience in cardiac surgery.


  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by NCCPA or one of its predecessor agencies. 
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • ACLS certification (completed by start date).
  • Experience in cardiac surgery.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate assertively as a patient advocate.

  • Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience with coordinating and managing complex and multifaceted projects. 
  • Demonstrated high level of motivation to learn and to participate in activities to improve patient care. 
  • Must reflect a professional appearance and demeanor and possess excellent customer service skills.

Desired Qualifications*


  • At least 1 year recent experience caring for acutely ill patients.  
  • At least 1 year of experience in a telemetry/step-down setting.  
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of current medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical treatment modalities of the post-cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Demonstrated experience with ventricular assist device and heart transplantation patients.   
  • Demonstrated expertise in facilitating the educational growth of others through previous clinical instructional roles.

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: Variable as needed by the department

Shift/Hours/Days: Days, shift length and days are to be determined and may vary based on department needs.  

Note: This is a temporary position without any guarantee of hours.  Work could be offered intermittently.
