Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn wants a graduate student, senior honors student, high

achieving upper level student or recent graduate to serve as an assistant to the Supplemental

Instruction Supervisor in the Behavioral Science Department.

The selected applicant will work from 15 to 20 hours per week observing and assisting

Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) in sessions; meeting with SI-supported faculty to ensure

fidelity in the administration of the SI program; helping to market and promote the program; assisting

in preparation for training and staff meetings; and keeping track of program materials. Other duties

may include:

? Occasionally substituting for SI leaders on a one-time or temporary basis

? Providing support and feedback to SI leaders about sessions

? Updating SI social media sites

? Maintaining searchable spreadsheet for session plans and worksheets (by course)

The SI program provides free and anonymous group study support to students in traditionally

difficult courses as part of the university?s effort to promote student achievement and retention of

students to graduation.

Responsibilities*

Assist the SI Supervisor: in reviewing SILs session plans and providing feedback; holding regularly scheduled office hours to be worked out with the supervisor; compiling and cataloging work sheets and session plans;  checking and sometimes entering attendance data for research; providing mentoring to newly hired SILs; assisting in locating substitute SI leaders to facilitate a session if a SIL has an emergency. The assistant must respond to all SI supervisor communications within 24 hours and assist in planning and conducting training sessions / staff meetings throughout the school year as well as for the August intensive training workshop. The assistant may also assist in updating and maintaining UMD-SI Behavioral Science social media sites and other marketing tools; meet with SI-supported professors during a semester to ensure that the SILs are meeting the needs of the students; assist in developing new ideas and implementing ways to market SI and increase attendance; assist in university-sponsored activities to meet and greet students (new and existing); meet weekly or more often as needed with the SI Supervisor. Additional duties may be assigned by the SI Supervisor as needed

 

Required Qualifications*

The  assistant must be a high-achieving upper-level student, or recent graduate; must be trained and thoroughly familiar with SI goals and objectives; must be willing to complete the yearly 2-day BehSci SI training prior to starting work as assistant; have a cumulative GPA of B+ or better; obtain a faculty referral; be responsible, dependable, honest, and mature, Must be friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diverse student body and faculty. Must be able to work independently to carry out duties. Must have knowledge of and adherence to professional, ethical and privacy standards of UMD

Desired Qualifications*

Upper level, graduate or established Honors student in CASL; previous experience working as an SI leader; prior strong knowledge of SI goals and objectives; cumulative GPA of A- or better; instructor recommendation letter explaining special qualifications to be an SI assistant.
