Highly motivated individual with technical expertise in biomedical research and managerial experience sought for a Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate in a basic research laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, at the University of Michigan Medical School. The candidate will work closely with the lab PI, as well as graduate students and research staff, to manage operations and assist in research projects focused on cancer research
1- Under general direction of the PI, develop, design and conduct research related to cancer biology utilizing biochemical, molecular and cellular biology expertise including (but not limited to) cell-based studies, fluorescence microscopy, gene and protein expression profiling, etc. Document, analyze and evaluate results; identify new research methods and techniques; identify and solve research problems. Conduct analysis of data, interpret and implement research methodology based on outcome of analysis, collaborate, review, and critique data collection of other researchers
2- Train and assist graduate students, research fellows and undergraduate students with material preparations, research techniques, methods and procedures and use of instruments. Explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes in order to help advance the research objectives of laboratory. Have oversight of day-to-day operations; manage chemical and biological inventory of the lab; oversee safety protocols for the laboratory.
3- Have responsibility for the administrative, personnel and planning aspects of multiple current and future projects in the laboratory; collaborate on the preparation of research proposals and applications for grant funding.
4- Co-author or assist the faculty with the preparation of papers for publication.
Master's degree in biomedical sciences or a related field with additional 5 years of experience (at least) in cancer research is required. Experience in cancer biology, biochemistry, and cell biology is required. Demonstrated experience in training and management in the areas of research project design and demonstrated experience in laboratory and research operations management.
Doctoral degree with at least 5 years of experience. Research expertise involving the following techniques desired: fluorescence microscopy, immunofluorescence image analysis, genomics and/or proteomics, DNA and RNA manipulation, cloning, PCR, western blots, protein isolation and other cell based assays, flow cytometry, Genomic DNA and Plasmid DNA Extraction, and gel electrophoreses for DNA, RNA, and Proteins is desired.
