Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry in the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, positive, highly motivated, organized, autonomous person with excellent multitasking ability and record-keeping skills to join our growing research team. The Website Designer will work with the principal investigator, program coordinator and web developer to accurately and efficiently carry out a range of tasks associated with a 1-2 year research study. This study aims to implement and evaluate a training model designed to increase utilization of evidence-based mental health practices among school- and community-based professionals. Continued employment beyond the end of the research study is not guaranteed but may be optional pending funding. This is NOT a lab position.


The Website Designer will work closely with the principal investigator, program coordinator and web developer to continue developing and refining the TRAILS website.  This individual may facilitate focus groups to improve the user experience, streamlining overall accessibility and usability.  The web designer should have experience in graphic design, and be able to use a variety of graphics software applications, techniques, and tools -- including Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator and Invision. This person will design and develop user interface features, site animation, and special effects elements, while contributing to the project team’s efforts to enhance the appeal of the organization's online offerings and support the organization's strategies and goals relative to external communications. The ideal candidate should hold a degree in graphic/ui/ux design, information science, computer science, or have equivalent work experience. Experience in healthcare, public health, or any social sciences will be advantageous. Most importantly, we seek applicants with experience developing rich web applications that have expertise in the usability and graphic arts of web design.

Required Qualifications*

  • Professional level portfolio showing the depth and breadth of your skills is required as part of the application submission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic/UI/UX design or related field.
  • 1-3 years experience of UX and/or UI design experience working with digital products.
  • Experience in CSS, HTML, Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, InVision -- and always evaluating the right tools for the job.
  • Ability to discuss pros and cons of different UI/UX designs and their implementation as they relate to development as well as the end user.
  • Experience creating detailed and responsive user flows, wire-frames and specs for web applications.
  • Experience working in Agile environment.
  • Analyzes results and synthesizes learnings for team to improve or inform new features.
  • Design across multiple platforms and responsive applications that can fit screen sizes for tablet, laptop, mobile and desktop.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to accommodate frequent feature requests and design modifications.
  • Highly motivated, organized, autonomous person with excellent timeliness and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in user testing is a plus.
  • Experience in digital accessibility design according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 AA (WCAG 2.0 AA).
  • Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and school-based professionals in the community; punctuality; and ability to demonstrate flexibility within an evolving community participatory research project.
