Job Summary

The Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) provides guidance and services to researchers using animals at the University of Michigan. ULAM is seeking individuals to join our team who are committed to the compassionate care of animals. Responsibilities*

Provide for the daily care and handling of laboratory animals, mainly rabbits. Specifically, the position involves the management of primarily a rabbit breeding colony but may also manage rodent breeding colonies for Primary Investigators, this includes record keeping, ear tagging/tailing, setting up/retiring breeding cages, e-mail correspondence with PI/lab personnel and other specialized lab requests. Identify clinical and behavioral signs of illness in animals and report accordingly. Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Standards. Assist animal care supervisor with administrative and other tasks that will require additional training and a high skill level.

This position is considered critical staff under University Reduced Operations definition and an annual influenza vaccination or proof of exemption may be required

Required Qualifications*

* High School diploma and 3-5 years of paid animal experience

* Minimum of 1 year experience working in a laboratory animal setting either in direct care, supportive care, or research

* Certification of American Association for Laboratory Animal Science - Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) within 6 months of being eligible

Must be able to function positively both independently and in a team setting. Must be able to communicate and work effectively and professionally with internal and external customers.

Must be able to work between a level of 8” above the floor and up to 7’ above the floor. Requires pushing and pulling of equipment weighing up to 1,000 pounds and performing repetitive motions over extended periods of time. Requires considerable use of arms, legs and activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and the handling of materials which may weigh as much as 50 pounds

Desired Qualifications*

* Experience working with rabbits, rodents or providing daily care to laboratory animals is highly desirable

* Advanced knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities

* Advanced knowledge of animal research and breeding procedures and practices   

* Some knowledge of the principles of medical asepsis 

* Skills that demonstrate the ability to communicate in a professional, positive, and helpful manner with coworkers, management and research community

* Associate or Bachelor's degree

 

Work Schedule

Full time/40 hrs. weekly/Day shift/M-F/Some weekends and Holidays

May vary between buildings on North, Medical and Central Campuses
