Course Description

This is primarily a lecture course. Information in the course includes:

  1. The relationship between educational inequality and environmental inequality.
  2. Urban and rural poverty.
  3. Housing and homelessness.
  4. Toxic food consumption.
  5. Food insecurity.
  6. Urban farming.
  7. Hazardous waste disposal and racial disparities.

The course will focus primarily on the domestic context of environmental justice issues.

Responsibilities*

  • Lead discussion sections
  • Lead on-campus field trip
  • Attend weekly planning meetings with professor leading the course
  • Read assigned materials
  • Attend all lectures
  • Keep attendance records
  • Grade papers and keep records of topics students write on
  • Develop activities for students to do in discussion session
  • Hold office hours
  • Help maintain course CTools site

Required Qualifications*

  • Prior completion of environmental justice, urban planning or sociology coursework.
  • Knowledge of organizational change and development.
  • Familiarity with extracting information from the Census; familiarity with TRI databases.
  • Demonstrated experience with Power Point; Excel spreadsheets.
  • Familiarity with video equipment and projectors. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at undergraduate institution was not English, student must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Prior experience as a GSI desired.

Decision Making Process

Faculty review applications for positions in their courses and indicate their preferences. They are also asked to indicate whether they regard any applicants as unqualified and why.

Selection Process

A committee comprised of the Associate Director and the Department Administrator reviews faculty recommendations to determine and move forward with selection preferences where possible. The Associate Director determines appointments where no clear selection is possible.
