Responsibilities*

  • Work with a team of genetic counselors and medical geneticists to provide genetic counseling services in line with ACGC Practice Based Competences and NSGC Code of Ethics.
  • Identify and coordinate appropriate genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies for genetic assessment.
  • Provide written documentation of genetic, medical, and counseling information for families and their health care professionals 
  • Obtain, evaluate, and discuss individual, family and medical histories to determine the risk for genetic or medical conditions.
  • Explain genetic test results, inheritance, management, and follow up recommendations.
  • Evaluate patient and/or family responses and emotions in order to provide anticipatory guidance and psychosocial counseling and support 
  • Participate as a team member in patient treatment conferences 
  • Train and clinically supervise graduate genetic counseling students and other trainees within the healthcare system.
  • Contribute to genetic or related research projects by assisting in projects, analyzing data and preparing and presenting papers for publication.
  • Initiate, develop, and recommend changes to policies, procedures, and patient care activities within the department 

 

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree from a genetic counseling program accredited by the Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling or equivalent program
  • Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics within 24 months of starting the position
  • Considerable knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work both independently and as a member of our team
  • Effective time management skills, attention to detail and ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential paperwork

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in a clinical setting – preferably pediatric
  • Experience with Epic, MiChart and other UM clinical applications
  • Reasonable knowledge of University Hospital policies and procedures
