Responsibilities*

Basic Function & Responsibility:

A. For Michigan Medicine Physicians:

  1.  Lead institutional advancement and alignment of clinical Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Continuous Medical Education (CME)
  2.  Help facilitate and align other aspects of CPD

B. For Non-Michigan Medicine Physicians:

  1. For regional physicians: help advance strategic UMHS initiatives involving clinical CPD/CME
  2. For UMHS graduates: help develop departmental initiatives that help keep alumni connected to the institutions for educational programs

C: Collaborate on other UMMS initiatives (e.g. quality improvement) involving clinical CPD/CME for physicians

D: Oversee UMMS accreditation by Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and UMMS designation of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit

E: Oversee the implementation and utilization of a CME Learning Management System

F:Initiate innovation and scholarship in clinical CPD/CME

G:Administratively lead the Office of CPD  

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

A: For UMHS physicians:

  1. Lead institutional advancement and alignment of clinical CPD/CME 
    1. Identify and maintain relationships with departmental CPD/CME leaders and institutional clinical leaders (including quality improvement [QI] leaders) 
    2. Help departmental CPD/CME leaders to better:
      1. Develop departmental infrastructure to oversee and align CPD/CME planning
      2. Identify evolving educational needs of faculty and clinical priorities of the department
      3. Align educational activities and clinical priorities (including supporting QI)
      4. Incorporate Part II MOC opportunities into regularly scheduled CPD/CME activities
      5. Improve educational quality of CPD/CME activities (e.g., content, format)
  2. Help facilitate and align other aspects of CPD
    1. Identify and maintain relationships with individuals leading other CPD efforts for physicians (e.g., Faculty Affairs, Research, Compliance)
    2. Help facilitate those efforts and enhance alignment with clinical CPD efforts

B: For non-UMHS physicians:

  1. For regional physicians: help advance UMHS strategic initiatives involving clinical CPD/CME
    1. Identify and maintain relationships with individuals developing institutional and departmental initiatives involving regional physicians (e.g., affiliation, referral, education)
    2. Help UMMS departmental CPD/CME leaders develop related educational activities
  2. For UMHS graduates: help develop departmental initiatives for “educational partners for life”
    1. Work with UMMS leaders in medical student and graduate medical education to assist departments to foster a relationship of “educational partners for life” with trainees and alumni. 

C. Collaborate on other UMMS initiatives involving clinical CPD/CME for physicians

  1. Participate in initiatives involving groups such as other health professions (e.g., nursing), IT/enabling technologies, and patient safety.
  2. Participate on committees within the University, Medical School, and Health System involving UMMS CPD when directed. (e.g., Education Deans Committee, Clinical Teaching Skills Committee, Clinical and Education Conflict of Interest Committee, Educational Leadership Forum, QI committees). 

D.  Oversee UMMS accreditation by ACCME and UMMS designation of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit

  1. Assure that systems are in place to meet and document ACCME requirements
  2. Formulate policy regarding UMHS CME credit designation and address unusual situations
  3. Oversee functions of the CME Working Group to improve operational processes for CME
  4. Participate in the approval of designating CME credit for UMMS activities
  5. Assure that relevant reports on CME activities and participation go to ACCME, UMMS educational leadership, department chairs, directors of CME activities, and UMHS physicians
  6. Lead the periodic (4-6 year) reaccreditation of UMMS by ACCME  

E.  Secure and oversee the operation and utilization of a CME Learning Management System (LMS)

  1. Monitor institutional information technology needs for functions & infrastructure for CME LMS
  2. Oversee purchase, deployment, utilization, maintenance, and modifications for CME LMS

F.  Initiate innovation and scholarship in clinical CPD/CME

  1. Develop and disseminate innovations in areas such as institutional clinical CPD/CME, collaborations involving clinical CPD/CME, and/or CME accreditation.
  2. Develop approaches to encourage departmental innovations and scholarship in clinical CPD/CME for UMHS physicians and for non-UMHS physicians

G.  Administratively lead the Office of CPD

  1. Lead strategic planning, initiatives, and overall reporting
  2. Oversee administrative, personnel, financial, and information technology activities

Supervision Received:

Directly supervised by the Senior Associate Dean for Education and Global Initiatives with input and from the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (alignment with clinical initiatives) and the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs (alignment with non-clinical CPD). 

Supervision Exercised:

Supervise:        Program Manager, 1 FTE    Admin/Project Coordinator, .1 FTE

Faculty Appointment

In addition to a faculty appointment based in a clinical discipline if so qualified, this position will have a joint appointment in the Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS), facilitating opportunities to optimize educational outcomes and scholarship.  

Required Qualifications*

 

  • Faculty appointment with doctoral or advanced degree in education or medical degree with additional training in education
  • Experience in health care education development and delivery
  • Able to conceptualize problems at the level of the individual and the institution and integrate both levels in solutions
  • Able to: engage multiple stakeholders in collaborative activities and lead/work effectively in teams
  • Able to communicate effectively (written and oral)

Desired Qualifications*

 

  • Experience in CPD/CME education development and delivery
  • Experience with leading or changing the delivery of clinical care
  • Knowledge of ACCME requirements
  • Knowledge of UMHS policies and procedures
