Job Summary

Information and Technology Services (ITS) provides technology and communications services in support of U-M Ann Arbor's academic and research needs.  ITS also manages the administrative computing systems and executes the IT security strategy for the Ann Arbor campus, Michigan Medicine, and two regional campuses, Flint and Dearborn.  Information and Technology Services (ITS) has an immediate opening for an Accountant Lead in our Finance area.  The main responsibilities of the position will include:

  • Preparing income and balance sheet statements and various other accounting statements and reports, taking into consideration policies, industry standards, procedures and requirements, for assigned areas.
  • Creating and monitoring budgets, updating forecasts and performance reports for assigned areas.
  • Analyzing financial reports and records comparing to budgets and making recommendations relative to the accounting reserves, assets and expenditures.
  • Reviewing and verifying the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications assigned to various records.
  • Reviewing recharge rates and rebill activity to ensure accuracy and efficiency.  Creating both standard and ad hoc reports showing actuals, inventories and budget balances.
  • Opening, closing and modifying chart fields, providing oversight for account reconciliations, investigating discrepancies and initiating corrections, managing and tracking department inventories, vendor payments, vendor contracts, etc.
  • Performing analytical studies and conversion of data into concise understandable reports.
     
  • Functionally managing and assigning tasks to other accountants.
  • Leading additional projects/activities.

Responsibilities*

  • Oversee accounting statements and performance reporting for ITS, taking into consideration policies, industry standards, procedures and requirements.  Collaborate with management to create monthly reports that are understandable and reflect the activity.  Build and support complex models to create 5-year outlooks and trends for optimal operating performance and strengthen decision making capabilities for management teams.
  • Manage the projected operating budgets for all ITS areas based on actual performance, previous budget figures, forecasts and other factors in accordance to established guidelines and University Standard Practice Guides (SPGs).
     
  • Analyze financial reports and monitor business transactions for accuracy and appropriateness of revenue/expenditures.  Initiates corrections or adjustments of financial transactions, as appropriate and communicates directly to management any material findings during course of review.  Verifies proper financial controls are incorporated into routine financial processes.
  • Direct the ITS capital project financial process ensuring proper use of funds, project scope and budget adherence.  Manage the updating of monthly forecast reports for project budgets.  Provide information to management for business cases and proposals.  Assist financial team on service enhancement projects, including:  financial analysis of budget components and financial reports.  Conduct complex special studies or recommendations relative to the accounting of reserves, assets and expenditures.
  • Act as a liaison between the finance team and management.  Communicate financial issues and other pertinent information of assigned areas to senior management.  Create ad hoc reports and reports for management as requested.
  • Perform complex analytical studies and conversion of data into concise, understandable reports. Leverage internal systems and data to answer questions and interpret data.  Collect and organize disparate sets of data into useful information.  Build clearly understandable analyses and models, documenting all assumptions.  Present findings/conclusions/recommendations.
  • Oversee the process of chart field maintenance including opening, closing and modifying chart fields, journal entry requests and preparation, and gap analysis involving random ITS internal audits.  Monitor operations for compliance with internal procedures and policies, implement any changes needed.
  • Lead the monthly and fiscal year end closing and the annual budget implementation process.  Analyze year-end audit process to identify any value-added improvements or changes that can be implemented. Assess any risk.  Review and approve University internal recharge rates to ensure compliance with A-21 and University policy.
  • Identify and quantify requirements, delineating the gaps between requirements and the capabilities of existing technology and resources and recommend improvements.  Following established business principles, standards and methodology, compliance regulations, manages activities related to:  design: development; analysis; planning; testing; implementation; and evaluation of solutions.
  • Stay current with assigned technologies; compliance regulations and standards, maintain and update knowledge of related IT technology, policies and procedures. This can include: on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, reading, research and testing.
  • Assign and review work of other accountants and evaluate any needed training.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting or a related field with a thorough understanding of accounting and financial principles.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of financial leadership experience working in a large, complex organization with multiple funding sources, and managing large volumes of work with a focus on customer service.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with database or data warehouse querying software to extract, manipulate and use in reporting.
  • High level of proficiency in developing multifaceted financial reporting, and activity based costing, budgeting and financial models with the ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a lead position to include responsibility for account planning, customer relationship management, project management, goal setting and resource planning.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP accounting and preparation of financial statement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in project management and analysis.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and collaboration applications.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree and/or CPA/CMA, CFA.
  • Experience with information technology management software, hardware and terminology.
  • Knowledge of fund accounting principles and Federal A-21 requirements.
  • Working knowledge of University of Michigan financial systems including M-Pathways, Business Objects and M-Reports.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
May require travel to various locations in buildings on campus.  May require working during non-business hours and on weekends.  Responsible for protecting data and information from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration or unauthorized deletion; and, following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of data, etc. as stated in a computer access agreement.  Responsible for the handling of financial & HR information with sensitivity and confidentiality.
