A total of one (1), 1.0 FTE, Advanced Practice Professionals (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide care to pediatric and young adult patients in the outpatient hematology/oncology setting.  
  • Direct care and management would include: initiation of evaluation, admission, outpatient care of patients, and coordinating patient care with inpatient pediatric hematology-oncology team. 
  • Patient and family education, counseling and support. 
  • Collaboration with and referrals to other health care providers, and provision of education to nursing staff, students, and the community.  
  • Perform and document via dictation medical histories, physical exams, and telephone conversations.  
  • Support the clinical practice of pediatric hematologists/oncologists, but also see patients independently.  
  • Perform procedures such a bone marrow biopsy, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, and intrathecal chemotherapy as appropriate. 
  • Contribute to the development, modification and interpretation of pediatric hematology/oncology guidelines, policies, and procedures, including quality assurance activities.  
  • Collaborate and serve as a resource for the health care team members regarding the mission of the institution. 
  • Collaboration of patient care coordination with clinic nursing support. 
  • Attend conferences and continuing education/staff development programs to maintain knowledge of current literature.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Required Qualifications*

NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is preferred.  
  • Pediatric Primary Care or Family Nurse Practitioner will be considered.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).  
  • Consideration of ACLS and/or PALS certification current or ability to obtain
 PA:
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by NCCPA or one of its predecessor agencies.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Consideration of ACLS and/or PALS certification current or ability to obtain
NP/PA
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as measured by references and interviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

Desired Qualifications*

NP/PA: 
  • One or more years of NP/PA clinical experience in pediatric hematology/oncology.
  • Prior experience working as a pediatric or family nurse practitioner.
  • Knowledge and experience ordering oral, intravenous, and intrathecal chemotherapy strongly desired. 
  • Knowledge and experience of Children’s Oncology Group chemotherapy protocols. 
  • Progressive expertise in the management of patients at the Advanced Practice level.
  • Commitment to clinical and translational research.
  • The ability to function independently.
  • Demonstrated leadership in work setting and other professional activities.
  • Experience in the University of Michigan, Michigan Medicine.

 

Work Schedule

Shift:  Day Shift
Hours:  40 hrs a week
Location:  C&W Mott Children’s Hospital

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
