Job Summary

The Facility Manager position is responsible for the operations, construction management, interior design management, security issues and space planning in assigned LSA units and buildings. You can also review information about LSA Facilities at:

More than one candidate may be hired from this posting.  The target salary range is $60,000-$70,000. The actual salary offered may be higher based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.


Facilities InfrastructureWorks closely with U-M service units in the oversight and coordination of activities related to facilities, maintenance, repair, and/or renovation. Serves as primary contact for LSA departments, in regards to facilities and operations issues. Monitors building mechanical systems, advises on mechanical problems and recommends solutions. Coordinates with contractors or service providers, and evaluates various courses of action. Assists in the management of facility issues as communicated by building occupants, monitors progress using U-M FMS system and follows through to satisfactory completion.  Coordinates telephone and data line services.

Construction/Project Management Responsibilities - Represent the LSA Dean's Office in the planning for renovation of the LSA spaces; track expenses and schedule assigned projects; liaison with Construction Services, central service providers, or the assigned contractor to resolve issues with assigned projects; provide estimates and an evaluation of departmental requests; inform units of the status of their departmental requests and facility issues; coordinate relocations to support renovations. Supervises and inspects field conditions and progress of work against project schedules.

Financial and Communication Responsibilities - Inform LSA units on the status of budget requests, work requests and facilities related activities that affect their unit; prepare required budgets, proposals, and status reports.

Emergency Response Responsibilities - Respond as directed to emergencies in assigned and other LSA Buildings as directed by competent LSA and/or University authorities.  Assist assigned LSA units in the preparation and execution of unit and building specific emergency response plans.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 1-3 years of progressively responsible engineering, facility management, interior design and/or construction project management work in an academic environment; strong project and financial management skills.  

Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications skills.

The ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action, especially with respect to space planning and layouts, and make independent decisions on significant matters, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.  

Be able to work within a highly interactive and collaborative team environment; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and leadership skills; strong organizational skills; computer competency in software applications for word-processing, spreadsheets, database and data retrieval programs in a file-server environment.  

Requires climbing ladders to inspect building conditions; entering and traversing building mechanical room spaces with low clearances, uneven footing and vertical access requirements.

Ability to respond in a timely manner to building emergencies across campus, including in extreme weather conditions and in buildings that have flooded, experienced a loss of electrical power or whose building systems or structure have been compromised by some emergency or unforeseen act.

Desired Qualifications*

Knowledge of U-M and LSA facilities-related policies and procedures; U-M Facility Management system (FMS), U-M Financials & Physical Resources system including asset management and space analysis

Supervisory and customer relations experience and demonstrated previous success as a team member working in an academic and/or research setting preferred.
