The Division of Colorectal Surgery is seeking a Certified Physician’s Assistant to join a fast-growing and collegial clinical group in the Department of Surgery. The Physician’s Assistant (PA) will conduct supervised, but independent practice focused in 3 main areas: (i) postoperative care of colorectal surgery patients; (ii) initial evaluation, treatment and management of patients with benign anorectal surgical conditions; and (iii) long-term surveillance of patients who have completed curative-intent therapy for colorectal and anal cancer as part of a survivorship clinic. As a key member of the clinical team, the PA will conduct both independent and shared visits in clinic, will undergo hands-on training in the performance of office-based anorectal procedures, and will supervise and support the Division’s nursing coordinators in managing outpatient evaluation and management.
The Division of Colorectal Surgery was launched in 2011, and cares for patients with cancer of the colon rectum and anus, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, pelvic floor disorders, and benign anorectal conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula, anal dysplasia and condyloma.
Other responsibilities will include:
  • Routine postoperative care visits.
  • Urgent clinic visits for evaluation of wounds, ostomies, postoperative concerns, and triage of urgent referrals.
  • Planning and scheduling outpatient operations for patients with benign anorectal conditions.
  • Office procedures, including anoscopy, incision and drainage, hemorrhoid banding, seton placement and removal, drain removal, wound debridement and others.
  • Ordering and interpretation of diagnostic testing
  • Attending and recording treatment plans created in our multidisciplinary tumor board
  • Ordering and prescribing of medications in accordance with statutes, rules and regulations of the State of Michigan.
  • Assisting in the referral to various internal and external facilities.

Required Qualifications*

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • DEA license required, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required
  • Consideration of ACLS certification current or ability to obtain

  • PA experience in Surgery desired as well as a candidate with previous background in working with residents.
