Job Summary

The University of Michigan is seeking a Course Engagement & Iteration Specialist to join a creative, talented, and growing Digital Education and Innovation Lab located within the Office of Academic Innovation (AI).

At the Digital Education and Innovation Lab (DEIL) we see an opportunity to encourage participation in online courses, such as MOOCs, to find new audiences for our digital initiatives, and to improve our offerings through iterative course design. The Engagement & Iteration Specialist will collaborate with faculty, project managers, learning experience designers, and media producers to manage the review and iteration of online courses and other learning initiatives at the Digital Education & Innovation Lab. The Engagement & Iteration Specialist will develop and lead a community of Course Advocates in the monitoring and maintenance of active courses.

Responsibilities*

  • Recruit and manage students to assist in monitoring online courses 
  • Identify new audiences for existing courses
  • Develop relationships to foster new audiences
  • Develop plan and manage course iterations
  • Work collaboratively to develop data­based personas
  • Execute course reviews as part of a course review process
  • Apply user experience research and iterative design principles to improve upon online and residential learning experiences
  • Investigate and disseminate innovations in digital learning being done by outside vendors and external schools & institutions to encourage learner engagement and course iteration

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 or more years of experience in a higher education setting in educational technology, instructional design, information science, project management, teaching, or consulting
  • Familiarity with: Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Open Educational Resources (OER), Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Coursera, Canvas, edX and other educational platforms
  • Background and comfort in conducting 1:1 interviews with prospective learners and other constituents
  • Demonstrated experience with analyzing and debriefing the results of qualitative and quantitative feedback
  • Enthusiasm for technology­enhanced learning in the context of a public residential research university
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage workload under time constraints and conflicting demands
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of copyright regulations in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of accessibility regulations and related tools and techniques e.g. video captioning, descriptive audio, screen readers
  • Strong commitment to problem solving, teamwork and the ability to act independently

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree and 5 or more years of related experience (educational technology, instructional design, information science) or equivalent combination of education and experience  Experience developing community engagement
  • Experience managing students
  • Experience in a research­focused university setting
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, technology and standards of digital media production
  • Pedagogical knowledge of online and hybrid teaching, including instructional design theory and blended delivery
  • Experience with work productivity tools (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Teamwork, Gantt charts)
