The University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-D) is one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan. The Office of Career Services, at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, in partnership with the Business Engagement Center, seeks a Relationship Manager. The Director of Career Services and the Director of the Business Engagement Center will collaboratively set strategic direction and provide supervision for this position. The Relationship Manager will function as a team member in the Office of Career Services, the Business Engagement Center and the larger university community to advance strategic goals. This position requires a self-motivated individual who can succeed in a dynamic environment. Additionally, the candidate needs to be capable of identifying new partnership building opportunities, as well as the ability to maintain productive relationships with established business and campus partners. Also required, is an understanding of employment market dynamics, relationship management and talent development. This position includes opportunities to impact positive growth and make contributions in terms of key campus initiatives and priorities. 


  • Identify new opportunities and lead efforts to secure and maintain business partnerships for university engagement, focused on talent and business development.
  • Assist business and industry in identifying the continuous improvements of industry wide qualifications, skill sets and units of competency.
  • Contribute to the management and growth of external business relationships, to provide an accessible contact point, and to facilitate collaborative interaction with all colleges, and business units.
  • Create and manage projects plans, including: data collection, input and analysis; developing project objectives; coordinating details and logistics from start to finish; and utilizing strategic input.
  • Responsible for all operational and administrative activities related to connecting Career Services and the Business Engagement Center, with talent development and broader university partnerships.
  • Work closely with external partners on strategic engagement.
  • Also provide clear and actionable information related to business partnerships across campus.
  • Perform other duties and assignments, as needed

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree required. Masters preferred.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in talent development and business engagement

Strong communication skills both written and verbal

Ability to interact with a wide variety of people and groups

Effective as both a team member or an individual

Flexibility to meet changing priorities

Desired Qualifications*

  • Candidate will be able to develop business relationships along the talent life-cycle from enrollment to post graduation touch points.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse faculty, staff, and business partners and maintain client relationships.
  • Demonstrated strategic planning abilities and relationship management experience with business, industry, government agencies, university leaders/faculty and board members or professional organizations.
  • Proven project management skills, excellent planning, organization and prioritizations skills, including the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and apply resources effectively in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present ideas effectively and communicate with clients, vendors, and others on the phone, via email and in person.
  • Ability to create reports, presentations, project management plans and schedules that communicate and track the progress within one or more Client Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
